Richard Thomson

(writes Iain McEwan)
"I was saddened to hear this week the passing of one of Kilmarnock Football Club's most loyal servants, namely Richard Thompson. I first met Richard when attending James Hamilton Academy in the early 70's when I was a new pupil and he was a teacher. Unfortunately I did not care much for learning in those days as all I wanted to do was play football. This is where 'I learned' that Mr. Thompson was a football fanatic and a Killie man through and through. He was very knowledgeable at football and would tell you when you were making mistakes and I can assure you I made plenty at left back!

After finishing school I never really saw Mr.

Thompson until the Bobby Fleeting revolution started at Killie when Richard was a leading light in the transformation at Rugby Park. He was a major shareholder at the time and through the campaigns and meetings to back Bobby Fleeting we became allies to sway the tide in Bobby's favour. His vision and determination in those days helped shape K.F.C. into the club we know today. This should never be forgotten. Richard never asked for praise, he only wanted what was right for Kilmarnock Football Club. This he achieved. So I think it fitting that KFC should now think to reward this man a small honour at its famous ground by naming something after him. That I feel is the least we could do."

We've lost a few great Killie fans this year and Richard will be very sadly missed by all who knew him. Richard was a football fanatic both through his work with the Scotland Schoolboys Association and with his loyalty to Killie. As stated in Ian's letter Richard was a major shareholder and did more than most during the turbulent boardroom problems in the late 80's. It would be fitting if the club took up Ian's suggestion and ensured Richard's name would continue to grace the club he loved.

One Team In Ayrshire!

Last Saturday provided great entertainment for the 3033 brave souls who headed to Rugby Park to see the inaugural WestSound Trophy. The over 35's got things going and some great Killie names of yester year grabbed a 2-1 win over our county rivals. The goal scorers were Paul Wright and Willie Watters and if the pair of them had stayed on the pitch I'm sure they would have taken some of the chances that were passed up by the current strike force!

The game was played in a good spirit with Rab Connor and Fab Rab Reilly playing for the yahoos who struggled to get their full quota of players, nothing new there then! The victory was even sweeter as we had to come from a goal behind scored by Henry Templeton, one of the few players who can eyeball Stevie Murray. Wrighty missed a penalty and judging by his reaction you'd have thought he'd just lost a cup final. All was forgiven however when the good lord Willie grabbed an equaliser (from another spot kick) then Bunion turned hero with 5 minutes left, justice was done.

The main event kicked off at 12.30 and after a shaky start Killie controlled the game and should have won far more easily than we did. Fulton's deflected 20 yard drive was all that separated the teams but if we had our shooting boots on we could have had another five.

JJ used the occasion to give Canadian Rhian Dodds his debut and the young midfielder repaid his manager's faith with a Man of the Match display, just pipping pocket dynamite Stevie Murray for the award. The 20-year-old gave a very polished performance and he may well feature in some of the tricky league fixtures on the weeks ahead.

We also saw the debut of young Steven Naismith who's been hitting the onion bag on a regular basis with the Under 21's and the Under 19's, in fact he's scored 14 goals in 14 games, when you are that good age is not a barrier. Hopefully when he fills out a bit he'll be the next youngster to break through so why not head to RP on Monday night and see the wee man add to his goals tally (hopefully).

We must give a special mention to Killie mascot Nutz who gave his finest all round performance in the Killie colours. His victory against the A*r mascots in the penalty shoot-out was outstanding coupled with his victory in the "mascot boxing" competition, the 'Ayr Freshener' was a touch of class as well, wonder where he got that from? We know who you are Nutz so we'll expect the same level of performance at every home game!

Many Killie fans shot away at the end of the game and headed to Hampden to see Scotland narrowly defeat Lithuania to qualify for the play-offs - although we took the Howard option. Three victories in one day is not something we see very often so you'll forgive us for being rather bleary-eyed on Sunday morning!

All Roads Lead To Dunfermline

Killie have had a week to celebrate their first silverware of the season but it's back to the real world on Saturday when we head for the kingdom of Fife. The plastic pitch may prove to be our biggest obstacle however the players will have trained on it this week so should have an idea what to expect. There have been several clubs criticising the East End Park surface recently but let's hope Killie become the first visiting side to triumph on the plastic. Prices for the game are Adults - £16 concessions - £10 and remember and if you are a season ticket holder stick it in your pocket. The Pars are giving 10% discount to all Killie fans that produce their season tickets at the turnstile.

Killie Trust Quiz Night

The Killie Trust will hold its first fundraising event in the form of a Quiz Night and Karaoke, to be held in the Park Suite on Friday 24th October 2003 at 7:30 pm. Quiz teams will be allowed a maximum of four people, non-members welcome, tickets cost £3 and are available from match day sign-up points (usually in the Park Hotel) or by filling out a form on the website www.killietrust.org and sending a cheque by post. The Trust would appreciate assistance in advertising this event and have produced a poster which can be downloaded, printed out and placed on notice boards, shop windows or other appropriate places, that too can be found on their website or on killiefc.com.

Youth Trust Dance

Another one for your social diary, the Youth Board are having a Supporters Buffet Dance on the 15th of November, 7.30pm-1am in the Caprington Suite of the Park Hotel. Tickets are priced at £15 per head to include a buffet and entertainment from the band, Aspen. The tickets will be on sale to supporters from this week, although there may be a change of plans due to Scotland's play off against Holland that is scheduled for the same day at Hampden. A letter is being sent to all supporters clubs to try and encourage them to take a tables of ten for the event and we hope that it will be slightly better attended than their Race Night - although that managed to rake in a few bob (over £1,200) anyway. To book tickets contact Nicola on 01563 545325.

The Big Match Raffle

The Big Match Raffle got off to a great start at the game against our no-use neighbours on Saturday. All funds are going towards Youth Development and prizes include a £500 holiday voucher, £300 cash, a table for four in match day hospitality and a wide screen television to name just a few. If you are a Shareholder or Season Ticket holder and would like to sell a few tickets on behalf of the club please contact Debbie Milligan on 01564-545318.
