Watters Nets 5 As Killie Go
Down!

Kilmarnock 6
(Scot First Division Match
39,
Palmerston Park, May 13th 1989)
Killie travelled to QoS to play for
their 1st division survival. They had to make up a 4 goal difference on
Clyde, to avoid relegation. Killie did so they thought until Clyde were
warded a 97th min at Firhill, and Killie were relegated anyways.
Already
relegated QoS gave up the matches 1st goal in the 39th min, when a suicide
Gary Fraser passback was cashed in on by
Willie Watters,
to net his first of FIVE goals on the day.

On 47 mins Watters again
netted through keeper Cunningham's legs after a Harkness shot had hit the
bar. Carpet fitter Watters completed his "hat-trick" on 54 mins with a
shot from 15 yards after having beaten defender
Shanks.
Robert "Fab Rab"Reilly then scored after a fine solo run in
the 61st min.
Eight mins later Watters nabbed his 4th after firing home a poor clearance
from Queens Gamble. Tempers flared on the park and McDonald was sent off
for a bad foul on Reilly.
Five nil up Killie thought they were safe, until the news came through
that Clyde were 1-0 at Firhill. So Killie needed one more goal!
Watters then had a goal chalked off for offside, but he did nab Killie's
6th in the 87 min.
We were safe! .... NOT!
The results on the day meant Killie would have to start their rebuilding
efforts of the 90's
in the 2nd division.
