Killie Destroy Their Neighbors

Kilmarnock 6
Ayr Utd 1
(Scot Premier Division, Match
8,
Rugby Park, Oct 31 1976)
This was only the second season of the
Premier Division's existence, and this was to be the first Ayrshire derby.
For
Ian Fallis (pictured right, who was later to be killed in a car
accident in Oct of 77) it was a superb afternoon, scoring a "hat-trick".
Former Rugby Park Brian Rodman, was probably one of the most surprised
players as Ayr trooped off the pitch 4-0 down at the half.
With
outstanding wing play from
Davie Provan (left) &
Gordon Smith, keeper
Jim
Stewart became a spectator for the first half.
Killie opened the scoring in 11 mins when a Provan
cross was headed home by Ronnie Sheed at the back post. Just
two mins later it was Derek "Big D's" McDicken's turn when
he finished a Smith cross, heading over the advancing Geoghegan in the Ayr
goal.
Geoghegan was at fault for Killie's 3rd on the half hour mark, and
Fallis's 1st as he let a shot from 15 yards out get under his
diving body. Fallis netted with a great shot off the upright
from a McDicken pass just 4 mins later.
To start the 2nd half Smith hit the bar, and Fallis missed a "sitter"
before
Fallis completed his "hat-trick". Provan again supplying the cross that
Fallis head in with the help of a deflection off of Ayr
defender Filippi.
Fifteen mins from time Killie replaced Sheed with
George Maxwell (right),
as Fallis had a mazy run all the way up the park
only to shoot straight at Geoghegan .
Ayr eventually got on the scoresheet with sub Masterton, with just 2 mins
remaining.
But Killie were not to be outdone, and from the restart Provan dribbled
the ball all the way up the park to deliver another cross for Billy
Murdoch (his brother was Celtic's Bobby Murdoch of 67 Libson fame)
to head home.
Kilmarnock: Stewart, McLean, Robertson, Murdoch,
Clarke, Welch, Provan, McDicken, Fallis Sheed (Maxwell) & Smith
