Pauline Hammill & Linda Brown - Both on target

Glasgow City LFC 1 - 3 FC Kilmarnock
(SWPL Match - 19th January 2003, 2.00pm Kick Off)

On Sunday FC Kilmarnock traveled to play their first league game of the new year against title challengers Glasgow City. This was going to be their first real test of the season as the city team had added three internationalists to their squad for this seasons campaign. This fixture had a history of being more of a physical battle than an attractive football match but in the past the Killie girls have always came out on top.

The game started at a furious pace as the home team decided to take the game to the champions right from the start and within two minutes Glasgow City had forced the first corner of the match. Although no clear cut chances were made by the home team, the Killie girl's found themselves chasing the game for the first quarter. However, the visitors started to come into the game more and gradually began to string some passes and clever moves together.

The home side looked pretty weak in defence and the Killie girls scored with a coolly taken strike from forward Pauline Hammill after 27 minutes. From then on the first half belonged to Kilmarnock and with some dominant play from Joanne Love in particular it was only a matter of time before the score line was doubled, Hammill scoring an almost identical goal from just inside the penalty box. Well worked moves created chances for Linda Brown and Joanne Love to punish the home side further but both put the ball inches wide.

The second half saw the home side score an early goal from a defensive error which set the game up for an exciting finale, however it proved to be more of a scrappy affair with neither side really dominating or creating any clear chances. The game was settled with only 7 minutes remaining when a penalty was awarded for hand ball. Linda Brown stepped up to slot the ball home for the full three points to the Killie side.

Although it was definitely not one of Kilmarnock's best performances it was a crucial win to put FC Kilmarnock on top of the Scottish Women's Premier League. This Sunday they take on Dundee LFC at home with a 2.00pm kick off at Hurlford Junior Park, why not come along and give the team your support.

FC Kilmarnock: Johnstone, Burns, Sneddon, Cheyne, Smith, Hind, Fowler, Love, McLaughlin (Black), Hammill (Hough), Brown.
