Kilmarnock FC - Player Profiles 2002-03
No.2
- Greg Shields
Full Name:
Greg Shields
Nickname:
Shieldsy
Position:
Right Back/Wingback/Centre Half
Date of Birth:
21st August 1976
Birthplace:
Falkirk
Height:
5ft 10ins
Weight:
11st 5lbs
Former Clubs:
Rangers, Dunfermline, Charlton, Walsall (loan)
Signed KFC:
4th June 2002
Notes:
Shields had a great time of it at Dunfermline after moving from his first
club Rangers and was picked up by Premiership club Charlton the season
they got relegated. He won many of the supporter's player of the year
awards the next season as they stormed back to promotion but then was
seriously injured and lost his place in the team. Charlton manager
Curbishly was under pressure to keep Charlton up and signed a couple of
expensive defenders (Kishishev and latterly Luke Young from Spurs) which
left Greig out of the picture when he came back from injury surprisingly
early. Words were had between the two about the situation which resulted
in Shields becoming Jim Jefferies first signing when he came on loan at
the tail end of last season. Since then he has signed a three year
contract (thanks to some smart negotiating by JJ he cost nothing up front)
and has made the right back berth his own. Of the current Killie squad
probably the most likely to be capped by Berti Vogts if he ever decides to
give 'provincial team' players a chance...already has two Scotland Under
21 caps.

Good
presence up the back, can clear the ball well too, was impressed
with him when he was on loan from Charlton at the end of last
season. Glad we signed him.

I
don't understand why he was having troubles at Charlton as I think
he is an excellent player.. superb signing.

Wasn't
convinced at first ,but has now totally won me round. Good defender,
doesn't waste many balls, his experience can only be good for the
team Great buy.

Only
seen him a couple of times, but looks good. We suffered last year
from only having small full backs, a good signing!

He
is a good defender and I think he will do really well for Killie.

Excellent
player who is probably JJ's best signing in my book. I agree he's
not as effective when asked to play the wing back role + I also felt
when Locke played on the right hand side the two of them were taking
up the same positions and making the same runs. When we play the
flat back four he looks a natural and has the essential quality
needed for a defender - he can defend!!!!!!

I
wasn't too keen on him at first but he has played well so far this
season and hopefully he will continue to do so.
Shields for Scotland ????

Was
impressed with him when he played for Dunfermline, although wasn't
he playing when we beat them 6-0 up there? Anyway started off slowly
but has steadily developed into a solid player this season.

Strong
energetic full back that has improved with every match for Killie
and after Scotland's dismal showing in the Faroes he must surely be
in with a chance of a call-up.

Excellent
signing, with an ability that we were sorely lacking - i.e. not
afraid to put the boot in!!!!!

Very
impressed with him from day one. Solid, strong defender, who also
scored one of the goals of the season/decade/century/eon (of course
he intended to shoot from there, shields for Scotland? nah...SHIELDS
FOR BRAZIL!!!)

Good
replacement for Gus at right back and a better crosser to boot. How
many times did Gus hit the first defender?
Tie him up for the future!

Yeah,
keep him at right back in a 4-4-2 and he's one of the best we've
got. Probably JJ's best signing. Play Canero in front of him at
right mid and there's the right side of the pitch sorted!
