Kilmarnock FC - Player Profiles 2002-03

No.5 - Gary Locke

Full Name: Gary Locke

Nickname: Lockie

Position: Defender/Midfielder

Date of Birth: 16th June 1975

Birthplace: Edinburgh

Height: 5ft 8ins

Weight: 10st 7lbs

Former Clubs: Whitehill Welfare, Hearts, Bradford

Signed KFC: 8th August 2002

Notes: Gary signed for Killie just after the start of the 2002-03 season after he had settled his contract wrangle with his previous club Bradford. Initially a right back with his first senior club Hearts, he had been moved into midfield by his Bradford manager and mentor Jim Jefferies, and consequently won their player of the year award despite them being relegated. Gary was formerly the Scotland Under 21 and youngest ever Hearts captain and JJ may yet see him as a future captain of our club at some point during his three year contract. So far we have seen little of Gary due to a few niggling injuries and his failure to make it into the team due to their current good form but in his few outings I would dare to suggest that he has suffered from being slightly overweight. If, or when, he manages to get back to a reasonable fitness level I dare say he will feature heavily in Jeffries plans.

I think he will be a good player for Killie.

Has been employed as a hard tackling midfielder and ball winner this season. Not necessarily his best position but gives his all for the jersey and has one of the hardest shots in the squad. Would much rather see Gary in a full back role where he produced his best performances for Hearts and earned him his place in previous Scotland squads.

I agree with the ref that he makes a much better full back. However JJ knows him best and he must know what he is doing. He is an excellent player when on form

Good attitude to the game and potentially an influential player for us but has been a bit disappointing so far. I'd like to see him get fitter and with an extended run of games he could be a player that finishes the season strongly for us. I always remember him as a full back and I've still to be convinced that midfield is his best position.

Have to be truthful and say that apart from his first few games I have been very disappointed by Gary Locke's form for Killie. Has not looked like a midfielder to me and was totally lost and uninterested at Ibrox where he did no chasing at all. Our midfield has noticeably improved with Canero and Mahood back to help Stevie Fulton. I don't know what will happen this week now Locke is "fit" again but for me he will need to win his place back by showing form in the reserves.

I expected a lot from him considering he was Bradford's POTY last season and I have been reasonably impressed. I think he's similar to Ally Mitchell but younger and faster an over time he'll fit in to the squad an become a good Killie player .

Must admit I haven't been impressed at all by Gary. He has huffed and puffed his way through the start of the seasons and after hearing reports after he signed I was really excited but hopefully he will pick up and start EARNING his wages.
