Kilmarnock FC - Player Profiles 2002-03
No.7
- Andy McLaren
Full Name:
Andrew McLaren
Nickname:
Andy
Position:
Attacking Midfielder/Forward
Date of Birth:
5th June 1973
Birthplace:
Glasgow
Height:
5ft 10ins
Weight:
12st 2lbs
Former Clubs:
Dundee Utd, Reading, Livingston (loan)
Signed KFC:
1st August 2000
Notes:
Andy was a member of the Arabs 1994 Scottish Cup winning side which secured him a move to big spending Reading. After a much documented fall from grace and an ensuing ban, Andy moved back north for a three month trial with us. He had an explosive start to his Rugby Park career which saw the then Scotland manager, Craig Brown, consider bringing him back in from the
cold which he did indeed do eventually. Despite interest from a host of other clubs (including Celtic) after his great start, Andy decided to repay the faith
former manager Bobby Williamson and the Killie support had shown in him and signed a longer deal to stay in
Ayrshire. Andy's form has been a bit erratic at times but he is without a doubt an immensely
skilful and talented player on his day.

After
serving a ban from football at Reading, Andy was offered the chance
to resurrect his career at Killie. Initially offered a three months
deal, he secured a longer term contract with some stunning
performances, especially against the Old Firm. His performances
tailed off towards the end of Bobby Williamson's reign but under Jim
Jefferies has found a new lease of life in a more central attacking
role.

Why can't everything blue be Killie ?

I
think Andy is a brilliant player when he is fully fit. Hope he has a
really good season.

Hard
working midfielder who likes to get forward can help score goals but
he isn't an out and out scorer, I see him more as a provider.
Gets into good positions and will always try to put a shift in
.

Played
well at Q.O.S. and got some telling crosses in at times. Ireland
done him no favours at all. Needs to improve fitness level and
overall work rate. Needs to get more aggressive.

I
saw him play for Reading once and was impressed straight away.
It's a shame the skill and determination that drew my attention soon
wore off!!!

My
favourite Killie player! I think he shone when he first signed but soon
faded away. Now under JJ he looks sharper and gives it his all. With
him an wee ruby fit there will hopefully be good service for the
goal scorers.

Spends
far too much time complaining and blaming others when moves break
down. But he can be a match winner, crowd pleaser, great crosser,
dazzling winger, grafter, defence splitting passer and goal scorer
when he's in the mood.
I know the Andy I prefer to see on a Saturday!

A
revelation when he first arrived but his form gradually fell away
under fat Bob. Since JJ arrived he seems to have the old hunger back
or is his contract due up?
Much prefer to see him play in a wide left attacking midfield role
rather than as an out + out striker - has chipped in with a few
excellent goals.

in
my opinion he's the proverbial phoenix in the flames (trying hard to
resurrect his career from the ashes)

hope I die before I get old (er)

When
it looked like his career was over and no one gave him a chance he
took the one shoot he had left and joined Kilmarnock. The way
he resurrected his career is amazing and he has went from being a
down and out footballer to one of the best players in the Killie
books.

He
is a superb player when his mind is right. Always looking to the
bench to see the reaction to what he's done. If we employed a sport
psychologist like a lot of sports do now I think we would see him as
a regular Scotland pick. Maybe JJ knows how to motivate him.

Andy
had a brilliant start to his Killie Career. 2 goals against Rangers
and a stunning goal against Celtic.
However, he has gradually faded away, only turning in good
performances when he is bothered.
But he fights for the clubs progression and we can't ask anymore.
Now Andy if u can just start this season like your first one.
2 goals against rangers please...if u don't mind!!!!!

Has
a good habit of scoring against Rangers on the first home games of
the season!
He's a great player when he has the right attitude and is totally
fit!

1-1 :)
1-2 :)

Blows
hot and cold. I work with a lot of Reading fans and they are of a
similar opinion that he plays when he wants to. I like that bit of
arrogance he has when he's playing with confidence.

Quality
player that knows how to please the crowd and shut up the away fans
Would be good if he was slightly more consistent but after what he's
been through the last few years I'm sure that will come. Although he
always looks tired he keeps going and what a start to the season

Consistency
is his biggest setback, match winner when he sets his mind on it ...
needs to work harder when things aren't going his way needs to be
less argumentative when things don't go his way can be very hot
headed for his own good in all been a very good signing and is a
very likeable character at the club and I hope he keeps his good
form up
