Kilmarnock FC - Player Profiles 2002-03

No.18 - Jesus Sanjuan

Full Name: Jesus Garcia Sanjuan

Nickname: ?

Position: Sweeper/Defensive Midfielder (centre)

Date of Birth: 22nd August 1971

Birthplace: Zaragoza, Spain

Height: 5ft 11ins

Weight: 11st 13lbs

Former Clubs: Real Zaragoza, Wolverhampton Wanderers (loan), Cordoba, Airdrieonians

Signed KFC: 28th March 2001(3 years)

Notes: Jesus (pronounced hey soos) spent 8 years with Spanish Premier Liga side Real Zaragoza. He is the only current member of the Killie squad to have a European Cup Winners Cup medal that he collected with Zaragoza in 1995 when they beat Arsenal in the final. This was the infamous game where Zaragoza player Nayim beat Arsenal and England keeper David Seaman from the half way line. And so was born a new song and a thousand jokes about 'lobbing semen', such is our sense of humour! Jesus was quietly effective in his outings in his first season in midfield but has excelled in his new role as sweeper, first under Bobby Williamson and latterly for Jim Jefferies.

Sanjuan has been a brilliant signing for Killie. He has played really well since he joined Killie.

I was unsure at first but since playing at the back, JS has been almost as good as Freddy! (now that is a compliment!)

Good in midfield but great in the defence. Played best in his sweeper role. great signing for Killie, and a cool name

A worthy recipient of my 500th post Jesus was signed as a midfielder by BW and took time to settle initially. He was switched to sweeper at Celtic Park last season when we were victims of an injury crisis and put in his, arguably, best performance in a Killie jersey. He has put in some excellent performances as sweeper since then and has become one of the most important players in the squad.

Jesus has turned out to be one of BW better signings. Has been a revelation since moving to the back also has excellent vision.

Could turn out to be a true Killie great.

Wasn't sure about him playing in defence at first, but he has certainly proved me wrong....pity he wasn't a goalie though....then you could really say 'Jesus saves'

Took time to adapt when he joined us but has improved a lot since Bobby moved him to the sweeper role, one of the few Killie players to have a cup winners cup medal

I hear they're even coming from...Gdansk to watch Killie play

Who'd have thought a fitba' player called Jesus in Kilmarnock?! Good player, strong when playing as a sweeper and shores up the defence whenever he plays there. Deserves to be worshipped for just being part of that 95 Cup Winners Cup Final when Nayim made Seaman flounder in the last minute.

Cue the old "lobbing Seaman 50 yards" jokes.

Jesus definitely looks better as sweeper than in midfield, and he could turn out to be a much more important player than anyone ever thought. But is he not 33 - 34 years old, which would make him pretty much a short-term solution.

Had a slow start to his career at Killie but has become a regular of late and is solid as the sweeper. His great performance at Parkhead last season was the best I've seen him play. Kept Celtic at bay until the swine's scored in the 97th min! At 31 he's still got a lot to offer to Killie.

Seen him play a good bit before he came to Killie due to going to the odd Airdrie game with my mate.... I knew he was out of place in div 1 and he has been a great Killie player.

An average midfielder but a class sweeper. A genuinely nice fellow that has time for the fans.

Seems to be able to play better out of position as sweeper.

Has been tremendous for Killie in that position, able to read the game and be where he is needed.

He is one of Killie's more influential players

Reads the game very well and isn't afraid to get stuck in when required. He's been excellent at sweeper but I'm not sure how long we'll stick with that system. Perhaps the confidence gained in defence will be reflected in any future midfield performances.
