Kilmarnock FC - Player Profiles 2002-03

No.19 - Stevie Murray

Full Name: Stephen Murray

Nickname: Ruby/Muggsy

Position: Midfielder/Winger (Left)

Date of Birth: 18th April 1983

Birthplace: Bellshill

Height: 5ft 4ins

Weight: 9st 12lbs

Former Clubs: KFC Youth

Signed KFC: 1st December 2001

Notes: Stevie was brought through from the youth ranks by Alan Robertson and first given his chance in the SPL by Bobby Williamson. Stevie proved an instant hit with the fans at a time when play had become stale and his exciting wing play gave the fans something to cheer about much in the way the introduction of Alex Burke and David Bagan had done in 1997-98. He had been selected to appear at youth level for Scotland but unfortunately an injury put a stop to that but that shouldn't stop him getting called back into the squad in the future. What Stevie lacks in height he makes up for in trickery and tenacity and he has the potential to be a match winner on his day. Jim Jefferies says that Stevie features in his plans for the future but his appearances have been limited so far this season by injury. Although established as a first team player... still one to watch, literally!

Loads of tricks, gets kicked a lot but keeps coming back for more. Hope his lack of size is not held against him by JJ who seems to prefer McLaren in that position!

Very young. Will need to be handled carefully. Remember Bagan and Burke!

I think he's the player we've been missing most so far this season and although I don't know how he fits in to JJ's plans I'd rather see him coming on and running at defences than Jose Quitongo. Definitely a fans favourite and another great prospect at the club.

Typical old fashioned winger with the speed and tricks to beat any defender on his day. Gets kicked a lot as you would expect and he will always come back for another go. The next 2 years will be very important in his career, because the defenders are becoming wise to his tricks and it will be interesting to see how he and JJ cope with it.

An exciting young player who is full of tricks. Always adds entertainment to the game and is guaranteed to get the crowd going. I'm looking forward to seeing him play again and hopefully he'll develop to fulfill his potential.

The first ever Killie player that's needed to take three strides before his shorts move.
The wee man was a breath of fresh air when introduced last December and his inclusion gave a lift to both the fans and the players. Opposition defenders will be wiser now but that won't be enough for many of them as he's a bag of tricks. Ruby provides width that we don't normally have and the shape of the team always looks better to me when he's playing. Cracking wee player.

hippo described him best with " a breath of fresh air".. looks like he could be a superb player... but then.. so did Alex Burke

The wee man is ending up more like his hero, Jimmy Johnstone, every day. What an array of skills Stevie has and defenders must hate it when they see him coming on. He has a 'never say die' attitude and always gives 110%. Always funny when you see him go for a header though. The East Stand have adopted him as their little brother - so no messin'

A player that provides us with that far too often missing ingredient - entertainment!
Don't you just love it when he turns defenders inside out with some fancy footwork!

Killie just don't look the same without him, their average size is 10" bigger. seriously though he's a genius with he ball at his feet an hopefully will be a Killie regular for plenty of years to come .

This wee man's going to be a legend before much longer, just 19 and already in the first team.

I'm surprised there aren't a lot of teams banging on the door trying to get him, or that Blobby isn't after him!!

A delight to watch. Rescued the Killie support last season by giving us something to cheer. Would be 1st on my team sheet for every home game.

Brilliant player. Always willing to run and take on players even if they're twice his height (usually the case!). Came in as an unknown against Aberdeen in December and stopped a lot of grumbling about Williamson and our poor home form at that time of the season. Good attitude too. Was interviewed in the SoS and talked about being knocked back by a few clubs. Realises he's a lucky wee sod to get paid for playing football, and said something along the lines of "when defenders start wising up to my tricks, I'll just have to work harder to learn some new ones". Brilliant attitude! Cannae wait to see the new tricks! Oh, and I'm taller than him, by a good half inch.
