Kilmarnock FC - Player Profiles 2002-03

No.24 - Gary McDonald

Full Name: Gary McDonald

Nickname: Gaz

Position: Midfield (Right/Centre)

Date of Birth: 10th April 1982

Birthplace: Irvine

Height: 6ft 0ins

Weight: 12st 7lbs

Former Clubs: KFC Youth

Signed KFC: 1st August 1999

Contract Ends: 21st March 2005

Notes: Gary is another product of Alan Robertson youth system and after coming all the way through the ranks looks as if he's definitely in with the chance of making the first team. Having made numerous appearances for the 'big' team under Williamson, it looks like Jim Jefferies also rates him enough to include him in the squad and has called on his services a few times already. Gary signed a new three year deal just before Bobby left for Hibernian and the way things are going for our former gaffer now, I bet he wishes he that he could poach him for his new club. He is a good passer of the ball, and as with our other youngsters, has a very good engine. With this new transfer window palaver I reckon you will be seeing a lot more of him before the season ends...so it may have it's advantages after all.

Great player, still young, will probably establish himself in the team in the next 2/3 years.

Usually found on the bench for home matches and in the stands at away games.

One of the most promising midfielders Kilmarnock have produced in many a year. With Ian Durrant as a teacher he will go far - he is a good tackler and his positional sense is excellent. Has an eye for a good pass and will improve with experience.

If Gary doesn't make it I'll stop eating Killie pies. He will be the next in the long line of youth players becoming a regular in the 1st team squad and eventually the team. Although I don't expect him to get many starts this season, he will deputise for Fulton when injuries and suspensions take their toll.

IMO a squad player this season and next. Then in season 2004-2005, he will be a regular in the centre of the park for us. Has plenty of time and will learn from Durrant, JJ and BB. Great potential.

An excellent prospect who even in the last two years has put in some outstanding displays in the reserves. Makes well timed runs into the box although it seems he is now being groomed more for in a playmaking role. Will become a first team regular probably next season but maybe sooner.
