Kilmarnock FC - Player Profiles 2002-03

No.25 - Gary McSwegan

Full Name: Gary McSwegan

Nickname: Sweegers

Position: Forward/Striker

Date of Birth: 24th September 1970

Birthplace: Glasgow

Height: 5ft 7ins

Weight: 10st 9lbs

Former Clubs: Rangers, Notts County, Dundee Utd, Hearts, Barnsley (loan), Luton (loan)

Signed KFC: 1st July 2002

Notes: Gary was another of Jim Jefferies signing who came in for stick before he even arrived because he was one of JJ's former players. He came through the youth ranks at Ibrox but never really cracked the first team and eventually moved south to Notts County for £400,000. After a couple of years down there he decided to move back north and Dundee United shelled out £375,000 for his services. After three years at Tannadice JJ moved in to take Gary to Hearts on a free transfer where he enjoyed a fairly successful period (including two Scotland caps) before JJ went to Bradford, then his face didn't fit any more and he spent the rest of his contract out on loan at Barnsley and Luton. To be fair when he finally arrived at Rugby Park he had missed the pre-season training and was well overweight and unfit to boot. After a pretty awful start and a real roasting from some sections of the Rugby Park faithful, Gary seems to have regained his form and his fitness and a few vital goals later has seen his six month contract extended to twelve months and possibly longer. Will forever be remembered by all Killie fans who traveled midweek to Aberdeen for the 'Waltzing McSwegan' song. We know how to party!

His confidence is low just now hopefully he will start to score some goals and get his confidence back.

Gary arrived unfit at Killie having not played for over 18 months and after a confidence battering display at Rugby Park against Dunfermline has worked hard to get close to a first team place again with 2 goals in 2 matches for the U21s. Only time will tell if he can do enough between now and Xmas to earn a new contract.

was never really a fan of his when he was a Jambo and, despite being a fair bit away from match fitness, he has been dreadful for Killie so far. I cant see him renewing his contract.

He has been given a lot of stick by Killie fans but I still think he'll silence them by scoring a few goals.

Genuine player who tries his best but has not produced the goods so far and will need to start scoring soon if he's to earn a new contract. Previously had international credentials but a lengthy period away from regular first team action appears to have taken its toll and he's struggling to recapture his top form.

Was a good player at Utd and hopefully he'll find it shooting boots again. Improving every game but desperately needs a goal to shut up the boo boys.

FINALLY got a goal! I feel sorry for the guy because he's come here unfit and with a lot to prove as a "hearts reject." I was disgusted with the way the home fans treat him but I  honestly don't think he's worth a long term contract .

Got to agree with Twisted on this one. Sweegie was played when he was nowhere near fit and had a few bad games and his only luck was bad luck. At the moment an extended deal looks unlikely unless he can get a few goals before the break. There was still no need for the guy to be treated the way he was by the fans.

OFGTF soon. Gary McSwegan Fan Club Membership No.0002---on a hidin to nuthin. I'm here cos I love Killie.

Very happy that he has scored at last. Always tries but 18 months of no football have taken its toll. Stick some more in the net and earn a longer contract.

I think that McSwegan should get a new contract cos just now he is playing immense and would be a big asset lost if he doesn't get a new one!!!!!

I thought he was crap to be honest in his first "few" games but over the past few weeks I have saw him he has certainly looked a lot fitter and has been playing better! I think he should get a new contract at least until the end of the season.

Another of the 'here till chrimbo' brigade. Had a tough time of it when he first arrived at the home of football. But with a lot of hard work, he has been steadily improving week by week, and now is starting to look like the sweggers of old. If he doesn't get a longer contract, I'll eat my hat.

F-plan diet ...works
Gary will prove he can score loads a goals...especially now he is looking about 42lbs thinner. I didn't recognise him at the Sheffield Wed game , but he was great against Dundeh. This guy was good enough to get capped and will always score if fit (and slim, therefore mobile). Hope he gets a longer contract now he is getting fit. Power tae yer pegs Gary and the odd headed goal would come in "handy"
