Killie Crumble and Crash Out of Europe
FC
Kilmarnock 1 - 5 KR Reykjavik Killie went into this match looking for a good result against the Icelandic team that could have seen them finish second, but unfortunately it wasn't to be. FC Killie started well enough but as half time neared the goals started to rein in. KR found the way past Johnstone three times before the whistle went with goals in the 37th, 43rd and 45th minutes and it looked like there was no way back.
Manager Chapman rung the changes just after half time in a bid to tighten things up a bit. Sarah Hough once again made way for Lindzi Bayne in the 50th minute and four minutes later striker Donna James was cut in favour of Belinda 'Oz' Seers...but it was to make no difference to the score line. In fact it was KR who struck again in the 61st minute, directly after bringing on a couple of substitutes themselves. Things started to get a bit testy at this juncture and Killie's Smith was shown the first yellow card of the game, but it wouldn't be the last. Four minutes later Johannesdottir suffered the same fate, but not before Magnusdottir (66 mins) had netted number five and effectively halted any challenge put up by the Scottish side. Tracy Burns was brought on for Penglase to try to shore up the defence but KR had no need to take any risks by pushing too many players forward. Samuelsdottir was yellow carded and substituted in the 75th minute and Megan Sneddon became the fourth player in the referee's book on 77. The pint sized defender had the final say of the game however when she scored Killie's second goal of the tournament in the 84th minute to make the final score 1-5. Killie were out...but not down. Jim Chapman knew that they would be in for a tough time with the team one match into the new season and not yet having jelled, and so it proved to be. They will find it tough in the league this season against a Hibernian side who have signed the majority of A*rs players (and Pauline Hammill from Killie) when they went bust, but one thing they don't lack is effort and determination, and we may well see them in this competition next season.
