Ladies Progress To The League Cup Semis

FC Kilmarnock 4 - 1 Ross County
(SWLC Quarter Final - Blair Park, 14th September 2003, 2.00pm Kick Off)

It was a slow start from the current holders of the League Cup and they went behind after two and a half minutes to visitors Ross County. The opening goal came from a throw in which was not defended properly. The ball was thrown into the box and put bundled into the net past a helpless Johnstone.

For the first fifteen minutes of the match Killie looked sluggish and just could not seem to get going. Eventually though in the 18th minute things started to happen. A good move down the left between Lesley Fowler and Julie Smith saw Smith's cross reach Jo Love in the box and the midfielder crashed the ball into the net for the equaliser.

For the remainder of the half the ball was bogged down in the midfield area for the most part and there was no further scoring before the break. What Jim Chapman said to the ladies at half time is anyone's guess but whatever it was it seemed to work and Killie came out all guns blazing.

Killie were now in the ascendancy and dominated play from the outset but it took until the 60th minute for them to make the breakthrough. Lesley Fowler collected the ball 30 yards out and made a sprint for the box. She laid the ball off to an onrushing Megan Sneddon who fired it high into the top right hand corner of the net...2-1.

Killie were now on a roll and only two minutes later they went 3-1 ahead. Bev McLaughlin crossed deep into the Ross County area and a mix up between the County goalkeeper and defender allowed new signing Lynzi Bayne to steal in and tap home her debut goal goal from six yards out.

Bayne played for the FC Kilmarnock Girls team last season and she further justified the managers decision to promote her to the 'A' team when she chipped in with her second goal of the game five minutes later. Once again it was her strike partner McLaughlin who did the spade work as she slid the ball between two defenders for Lynzi to run onto, and coolly slide the ball past the stranded keeper and into the net.

The game finished 4-1 in Killie's favour and they now face Hamilton away in the semi finals. Hamilton also came from behind to beat Newburgh 3-2 but they will need to be at their best to beat Killie who are gradually re-gaining fitness and form. Glasgow City, Killie's next opponents away in the league, and Cove Rangers will contest the other semi final.

FC Kilmarnock: Johnstone, Sneddon, J Smith, Kerr, Burns, Love, Fowler, McLaughlin, James, McCormack, Bayne
Subs: Seers, Hough, L Smith, Penglase, Draper
