Player Profile: 02 - Greg Shields

Full Name: Greg Shields

Nickname: Shieldsy

Position: Right Back/Centre Half/Sweeper

Date of Birth: 21st August 1976

Birth Place: Falkirk

Height: 5ft 10ins

Weight: 11st 5lbs

Former Clubs: Rangers, Dunfermline, Charlton, Walsall (loan)

Signed for Killie: 4th June 2002

Contract Ends: 4th June 2005

Notes: Shields had a great time of it at Dunfermline after moving from his first club Rangers and was picked up by Premiership club Charlton the season they got relegated. He won many of the supporter's player of the year awards the next season as they stormed back to promotion but then was seriously injured and lost his place in the team. Charlton manager Curbishley was under pressure to keep Charlton up and signed a couple of expensive defenders (Kishishev and latterly Luke Young from Spurs) which left Greig out of the picture when he came back from injury surprisingly early. Words were had between the two about the situation which resulted in Shields becoming Jim Jefferies first signing when he came on loan at the tail end of season 2002-03. Since then he has signed a three year contract (thanks to some smart negotiating by JJ he cost nothing up front) and is one of the first on the team sheet if fit. Of the current Killie squad probably the most likely to be capped by Berti Vogts if he ever decides to give 'provincial team' players a chance...already has two Scotland Under 21 caps.

Fan's Comments

CB: The best Scottish defender still playing today. All through last season, and for the first few games of this he has proved himself to be top quality. Our national coach however, couldn't find a good player in the 1970 Brazil team, so the chances of seeing Greg in any dark blue shirt (other than our own away kit) is pretty remote. But be in no doubt, this defender IS the dogs wotsits. Wake up and smell the pies Berti.

Suzy: Good player. Settled in well last year and was one of our most consistent players. Should definitely be in the Scotland squad and hopefully he'll have another great season.

bluehand: An astute bit of business by JJ to capture this lad. Best has yet to come.

Killie 75: Greg is a brilliant defender who was our most consistent player last season.

debz_ehg2: Good defender, probably STILL one of the best in Scotland yet STILL doesn't get picked for Scotland, Billy Brown says that Berti Vogts had never heard of him shocked me, some Scotland manager he is! SHIELDS FOR SCOTLAND!

alan g: Big fan of Greg, set the heather on fire a few times last season, more of the same this time round please. HE'S HERE BERTI!

FuNsTeR: Probably our best defender and JJ's best piece of transfer work.

minikillie: Excellent defender - totally solid. He'd be well worth Berti making a journey down the M77.

qwerty: Good at right back, great at centre back, this boy oozes class and is one of the best defenders we've had in a long time (Freddy apart). If the team start to string together some results he should be in with a chance of a cap or two, but you never know with this German clown in charge, He's just as bad as Craig Broon.

chuckle2: He is consistent for Killie every game. He's very fast across the ground and his tackles are timed perfectly. A bit dodgy in the air but has to be at least ten time as good as that carthorse Webster.

Killie_Damo: Great signing - my player of the year last season. Moving him to sweeper was what got us 4th spot last season. Should be a Scotland regular but Berti is incompetent.

killie paddy: Greg was superb last season, he was a rock at the back, also scored some GOOD GOALS
