Player Profile: 04 - Gary Locke

Full Name: Gary Locke

Nickname: Lockie

Position: Defender/Midfielder Right/Centre

Date of Birth: 16th June 1975

Birth Place: Edinburgh

Height: 5ft 8ins

Weight: 10st 7lbs

Former Clubs: Whitehill Welfare, Hearts, Bradford City

Signed for Killie: 8th August 2002

Contract Ends: 8th August 2006

Notes: Gary signed for his boyhood heroes Hearts from Whitehill Welfare and spent nine years at Tynecastle, breaking the record for their youngest ever captain. He also won 10 Scottish Under 21 caps while with the capital club. When Jim Jefferies moved down South to Bradford it wasn't long before Locke followed him. Gary used to play at right back but through time JJ has decided that he prefers him in a central midfield role, although he is still utilised in a variety of positions when deemed necessary. A tad injury prone, Gary has spent much of his career on the treatment table, including a lot of his first season at Killie, but he did miss all the pre-season training due to a contract wrangle with Bradford. Tenacious in the tackle Gary is no stranger to referees and can lose the plot at times, but that's not always necessarily a bad trait as we tend to lack a bit of bite in midfield of late. it has to be said that Locke is not a fan's favourite at Rugby Park but then he has not been able to put together a decent run of games...the jury is still out.

Fan's Comments

light blue wig: He was coming on to a game prior to his injury, and I think he will turn out to be a good signing.

Suzy: I think he was criticised unfairly last season by some supporters. He will definitely be a good player for Killie but it is just unfortunate that he got injured last week. Hopefully he can get over that quickly.

bluehand: Gary has a future with Killie. The manager isn't daft. I feel he is trying to hard and needs to relax his football. Best when going forward (like Fulton) and still not up to match speed.

Killie 75: Gary was unlucky last season with injury. I think that he will do well for Killie.

debz ehg2: Not a bad player, he's much better now than he was at first. Unlucky to get injured by a Jag last week, hopefully he will be back soon!

alan g: Gary's not had a chance to prove himself yet (injuries) looked decent in the Partick game until injured. Hopefully he'll go on to prove his critics wrong.

FuNsTeR: Probably one of our best performers against Partick, given a decent run in the team, he will turn out to be a great bit of business for us.

minikillie: And no, he isn't JJ's son-in-law either! Not my fave player, but I think we have to trust JJ's judgment because he stuck by McSwegan when he would have made cheap Brownie points with some of the supporters by playing him, as he knew he'd come right in the end. Hope Gary Locke does the same.

qwerty: He may have been a good player at one point in his career but I certainly have not seen him produce the goods for Killie. I have every faith in Jefferies judgment so he cant be as bad as he's seemed so far. Had a few decent moments but not enough to merit inclusion in the first XI. He must be blinding in training!

Killiesazza: Give time and no injuries he will prove himself at Killie and work well at getting the ball forward along with Stevie Fulton! Have seen some good skill at times, just need to hone in on that.

Killie Damo: Looks like one of those players who are never naturally fit and needed a good pre-season and looked like he got it this season. Looked good before his injury and look forward to him coming back and proving the doubters wrong.
