LEICESTER
City are expected to lodge a £400,000 bid for Peter Canero
with Kilmarnock today, (Jan 13th) which should enable the midfielder to
make his Premiership debut against Middlesbrough on Saturday.
City failed to send written confirmation of
their bid to Rugby Park last night, but a discussion between club manager
Jim Jefferies and the prospective buyers has paved the way for a swift
transfer, which could be completed by this evening if the Kilmarnock
accept
the bid.
It had been feared that the 21-year-old would
sign a pre-contract
agreement and see out the last six months of his deal, while Kilmarnock
would only be entitled to compensation having developed the player over
seven years.
Canero has reportedly rejected their offer of a three-year contract and a
60% pay rise in favour of a fresh challenge south of the border, and he
regards the move as essential to boost his international prospects.
Peter has been included in the Scotland future
team in the recent match against Turkey and is in contention for a place
in Berti Vogts' squad for the friendly against Wales next month.
JJ's Comments..."Peter
has been offered a three-year contract with us, but he has intimated that
he might want to move on. He's entitled to do that because he's out of
contract at the end of the season. We've not heard anything
officially but, unofficially, we've had a tentative enquiry. That may be
followed up in Sunday or Monday so we'll see. It's a similar situation
Stephen Pearson was in at Motherwell and I'm not going to let Peter go for
a paltry sum. But we'll get nothing at the end of the season for him so,
if the offer is reasonable, it's money that the club needs and, maybe,
part of that can be used to bring in a couple of new players before the
deadline. There is nothing in writing yet. We'll look at the next 48 hours
to see if anything concrete comes in and it will be up to Peter to
decide."
