Killie were streets ahead of Ayr early on
and took the lead in 25 minutes when David Lilley nodded
home a Stephen Murray corner from point blank range.
Home keeper Ludo Roy made a string of superb
saves to keep the SPL side at bay before conceding a second in 61
minutes.
A mistake by Marc Smyth allowed Murray to
set up Craig Dargo to drill home.
Ayr looked down and out but grabbed a
lifeline in 78 minutes when Paddy Connolly cleverly set up sub Stewart
Kean to drive home from the edge of the box.
Four minutes later the comeback was well and
truly on as fellow sub Graeme Brown smashed home Ayr's equaliser after
keeper Alan Combe had failed to hold a shot from Darren Henderson.
The tie went to penalties and Scott Chaplin,
Henderson, Connolly, David Craig and McLaughlin scored for Ayr.
Outclassed Peter Leven, Dargo, Kris Boyd and
Freddy Dindeleux were on the mark for Killie.
But the Westsound trophy was heading to Ayr
when keeper Roy magnificently kept out a firmly-struck effort from new
signing Gary Wales.
Somerset boss Campbell Money beamed: 'I'm
obviously pleased with the outcome but not kidded.
'At 2-0 down we could have been much further
behind and Ludo had a couple of great saves showing he's one of the best
in the business. 'I'm sure Barry will be delighted. It takes a bit of
bottle to take the last penalty against your old club.'
But Money's Killie counterpart Jim Jefferies
couldn't believe his side had blown it after being in control.
He groaned: 'Ayr never looked as if they
would score. Ludo Roy had four or five great saves and the fact he was
man of the match tells the story.
'I prefer to look at the bigger picture. We
outclassed them for 70 minutes and should have had it wrapped up. Kris
Boyd is a renowned goal scorer and could have had a hat-trick so he
maybe needs a game to sharpen him up.'
