Killie made it 4 on the trot, 9 points out of 9, and a third
straight clean-sheet for 2005.
Kris Boyd grabbed a double as Kilmarnock recorded their second
win in a week over Motherwell.
The Scotland Under-21 striker stroked the ball home after only 57
seconds on a day when
the visitors
missed a host of chances of their own.
Steven Naismith squandered a glorious opportunity for Killie before
setting up Boyd to fire in the second.
McDonald was the main culprit for Well, missing a couple of
chances as Killie repeated their
Scottish Cup win
from last week.
Simon Ford had replaced injured Gordon Greer in the Kilmarnock
defence, while Marc Fitzpatrick and William Kinniburgh were relegated to
the Well bench in favour of David Partridge and Paul Quinn.
Motherwell found themselves trailing with just 57 seconds on the
clock.
The home fans didn’t have long to wait for the
opening goal, 60 seconds to be precise. Freddie Dindeleux, making his
200th appearance for Killie, started the move with a long ball out of
defence. Gary McDonald’s a cross from the right was missed by Gordon
Marshall allowing Colin Nish to nod the ball back across goal to
Boyd who had the simplest of tap-ins.
Motherwell almost equalised seconds later when goalkeeper Alan Combe
spilled the ball and David Clarkson's strike cannoned off the body of
Ford.
Combe turned a 25-yard Scott McDonald drive past the post.
Defender Martyn Corrigan burst through but fired wide of the Killie
goal.
Stephen Craigan managed to get himself on the end of a corner and his
header looked goalbound until Freddie Dindeleux nodded off the Killie
line at the near post.
Killie's Steven Naismith provided the worst miss of the first half,
falling over when he had only
the goalkeeper to
beat.
However, the forward made amends by setting up Kris Boyd
for his second goal, the striker turning Craigan before firing home on
the stroke of half-time. (right)
McDonald raced past David Lilley into the box early in the second
half only to see the effort creep past the post.
Motherwell goalkeeper Gordon Marshall managed to tip Danny
Invincibile's point-blank shot over the crossbar.
McDonald set up Clarkson who successfully took the ball past the
Killie goalkeeper but was less successful in finding the back of the
net.
Danny Invincibile and Scott McDonald had a rare
opportunity to impress the Australian
national
coach Frank Farina who was watching in the main stand and just before
the hour mark both players were involved in the action with contrasting
fortunes. The Motherwell striker was the first to impress showing the
Killie defenders a clean pair of heels, but once again he couldn’t
finish and his final shot drifted harmlessly wide. His compatriot
Invincible was more convincing minutes later latching on to a clearance
ten yards out before unleashing a shot which Marshall tipped over the
bar at full stretch.
