Reserves Quick Out Of The Blocks

Kilmarnock 2 - 0 Aberdeen
(SPL Reserve Match - Rugby Park, 9th August 2005, Kick Off 19:00)

Killie's first reserve game of the season saw Aberdeen come calling to try and avenge Saturday's result. Fraser Wright was at the heart of the Killie defence in a Killie team that was a mix of youth and experience. The opening 20 minutes was fairly subdued with Wales coming closest with a 20 yard drive straight at keeper Langfield. Aberdeen came into the game and forced a couple of corners but they never threatened Cameron Bell.

Killie then dominated for a spell with Dillon firing straight at Langfield after good work from Leven then Wright missed from close range from a Leven corner. In 36 minutes a great cross from Di Giacomo saw Wales sliding at full stretch but just missing the target.

Two minutes later Killie went deservedly in front from the penalty spot. The lively Murray played a neat one-two but as he burst into the box he was hauled down by Thomson - a stonewaller. Leven sent the kick low to the right sending Langfield the wrong way.

Wright then missed another chance with a carbon copy of his earlier miss from 6 yards. Aberdeen fought to get back into the game and Craig had a low drive well blocked by Bell. On the stroke of half time Killie doubled their lead with a lovely goal. Di Giacomo set off on a lung bursting run before firing a low cross into the box. The ball eluded Wales but fell for Robert Campbell who drilled a beauty low into the corner.

Aberdeen came out looking for a quick goal and they should have had it in 50 minutes. A clumsy Wright tackle by Wright on Kiely saw the referee award another spot kick. Craig sent the penalty low to Bell's left but the keeper guessed correctly and pulled off a fine save.

As the game went on the game opened up and Killie started to dominate once again. The neat midfield passing of Leven, Dodds and Murray was opening up the defence but we couldn't add to the lead. Di Giacomo came close twice as did Leven following some lovely passing moves.

Killie held on comfortably and deserved their ovation at the end of the game. Killie were best served by Campbell, Murray and Di Giacomo whilst Winter worked hard for the visitors. I'd also like to give a mention to substitute Jamie Adams who could be the next youngster to make a big impression.

Kilmarnock: Bell, Mort, Dillon, Dodds, Wild (Adams 66), Wright, Di Giacomo, Campbell, Wales, Leven, Murray
