Killie Youths Ease Through to Next Round

Kilmarnock 2 - 0 Albion Rovers
(Scottish Youth Cup Match - Rugby Park, 16th October 2005, Kick Off 13:00)

Killie progressed to the next round of the Youth Cup with a 2-0 win in an entertaining encounter at Rugby Park. Included in the Killie line up was Ryan O'Leary, the recent signing from Aberdeen, the big man had a decent game.

Killie started brightly and went in front after seven minutes. Good work by Tommy Coyne ended with a cross to Iain Flannigan who finished neatly.

Killie continued to push and doubled their lead in 20 minutes with a fantastic solo effort by man of the match Rory Loy. The youngster went on a mazy run which took him past three defenders before curling a 20 yard beauty into the top corner.

Adams went close two minutes later but his 30 yard drive was well saved by Quinn. The visitors then had a good spell of pressure and Alexander had an effort well saved by Logan.

In 32 minutes Rovers had two near misses in quick succession. Mackie flashed a header across the face of goal before Middleton cracked a shot that flew just wide. Killie finished the first half strongly with Coyne, Adams and Cox all coming close.

The visitors started the second half well and nearly pulled one back within 30 seconds of the restart. Alexander tried a clever chip from the edge of the box but his effort floated just over.

On the hour mark Cox tested Quinn from 20 yards before Killie had a goal chopped off in controversial circumstances. Coyne intercepted a poor pass back and lobbed it over the advancing Quinn however the linesman stuck his flag up for offside - a shocking decision.

Logan saved well from Dewar in 72 minutes but as the visitors tired Killie missed a host of chances in the last quarter of an hour. Coyne missed from point blank range after a good run by Flannigan and Adams fired the rebound inches wide.

Further efforts from Coyne (twice), Cox (twice), Loy and Davidson who cracked the post could have made it look very easy but that may have been a little unfair on Rovers who battled hard throughout. A fine win for Killie with good performances from Loy, Adams and Coyne whilst Quinn and Alexander were best for Rovers.
