Fernandez forged a reputation as one of the most skilful players in Scotland during his first spell at Livingston, prompting then Celtic manager Martin O'Neill to spend £1million to bring him to Parkhead in 2002. But the striker's career never took off in Glasgow and after a fruitless season he was loaned back to Livingston.
During his three
seasons on Celtic's books Fernandez started just
three league matches and it was no surprise that he
was released when his contract expired in 2005.
Dundee United moved for him and he was a regular in
the Tannadice team last season. But when Gordon
Chisholm was sacked as manager, and replaced by
Craig Brewster, Fernandez found himself surplus to
requirements on Tayside.

Brewster targeted five of the club's high earners as he set about rebuilding the club, and Fernandez became available for Killie to sign
