Ferdy On His Long Road Back!

David Fernández is now looking forward to playing again.  He knows he will not be anywhere near ready to turn out against Celtic in the opening match, but he is determined to be back in the team at some point this season to repay the faith shown in him by others. Ferdy suffered a shattered knee and cruciate ligament damage after a horror tackle by Celtic`s Garry Caldwell last October, an injury which has kept him out the game ever since and will keep him out for at least another 3 months. The injury has required two operations to repair the cruciate damage after the reconstruction of his knee.

"The surgery was done in two stages as there was damage to the nerves in the knee. When the medical work was over there was a problem over straightening my leg and that was a definite worry.

"I will always try to keep to myself what I was going through in my head at that time but publicly I'll say I decided I would never give up until I'd run out of every option for a full recovery.

"These months have taught me so much about myself and the people who surround me. The seriousness of my situation was starting to play with my mind until I got such support from everyone at Kilmarnock and from Celtic as well.

"I've come to the conclusion it's part of the character of this country to show concern for others when they need your help.

"The boss, Jim Jefferies, worried about me. The chairman, Michael Johnston, worried about me. The people at Celtic showed concern as well."

"I have to make a comeback for the family and friends who've stood by and supported me over these months. I will dedicate whatever I do in the future to them for the inspiration they've given me.

"The greatest present I could ever have at Christmas  time would be if I were able to train, and play again for Kilmarnock.

"I'm happier than I was a couple of months ago although I've still got mountains to climb, like kicking the ball for the first time."

From Weds 1st Nov 2006... Sandy Ferguson supplies killiefc.com with some exclusive David Fernandez injury photos. You can clearly see Underhill not calling Lennon's foul moments before David's horrific injury. Also you can see Hay, Leven & JJ's expressions. - Here
