Frazer Wright is determined not to
give up his spot at the heart of the Kilmarnock defence but knows he
faces stiff competition.
The 28-year-old started on the bench
in last week's season-opening 1-0 win over Hibernian as manager Jim
Jefferies opted for Ryan O'Leary and Simon Ford as his centre-half
pairing.
Wright, however,
was called into action during the first half of the Clydesdale Bank
Premier League clash as O'Leary had to go off after dislocating his
shoulder.Having got back in
through O'Leary's misfortune last weekend, Wright is determined to
stay there.
He said: "It was
disappointing not to start as you're always looking to be in the
team for the first game of the season. But the manager
said it's going to be a long season and to keep my head up. But I've been
lucky and Ryan O'Leary has been unlucky and I've managed to get back
in the team and hopefully I'll stay there. There is strong
competition all over the squad. We have four
central defenders competing for the two places, the manager has just
signed Donovan on loan so we have a few strikers and there are loads
of midfielders.
"So there is good
competition. It's important to
get a good start and for us to do that in our first game was good
and that sets us up nicely. We've now got St
Mirren away and then Hamilton at home, so it would be good to pick
up points from them."
Oct 2nd 2008: Frazer Wright
admits he regrets slapping Shunsuke Nakamura - but believes the
incident was blown out of proportion.
"I think it was
blown out of proportion a wee bit but I know I shouldn't have done
what I did, I was out-paced by [Georgios] Samaras for the second
goal and then to lose a penalty the way we did, my emotions just got
the better of me. I've not spoken to him about it but I'm sure I'll
be able to do that when we play Celtic in the cup in a few weeks.
Hopefully it will be forgotten about but you know what fans are
like, they will probably bring it up. I'm not going to do it again
anyway!"
"It was a good
start to the season and then we had the Old Firm back to back, If we
had taken anything from that it would have been a bonus. But last
week we let ourselves down a bit by losing to Inverness. I don't
know why it happened. If we knew that, we would never lose a game.
We just have to make sure we get back to
winning
ways this weekend. We had a good result in the League Cup after the
two defeats to the Old Firm and we really should have carried that
on into the Inverness game. There is no doubt on Saturday that we
need to bounce back."
