Kilmarnock have confirmed the signing
of Derry City striker Conor Sammon for an undisclosed fee.
The
21-year-old has been training with the Ayrshire side but his move to
Rugby Park was put into doubt on Saturday when Hamilton had a bid
accepted for the target man.
Derry claimed several other Clydesdale
Bank Premier League clubs had shown an interest. However, Jim
Jefferies' side quickly reached a deal with the Irish side and Sammon signed a three-year contract.

“I’m so glad to finally be a Killie
player and I can’t wait to get stuck in. I was lucky enough to get a
chance against Stenhousemuir and I scored, which was great, Now the
target is to get my first goal in the SPL. Every striker is judged
on goals, and I would be hoping to score in my first game, and if I
didn’t I would work hard to score as soon as possible after that. My
dream as a young boy was to play professional football and then to
play at the highest level possible. The SPL is up there with the
best of them. I’m settling in well and the lads here are making it
easy. Tim Clancy has been helping me translate some of what the boys
are saying, but the atmosphere is great here"
Sept
20th 2008:
Conor Sammon ratified his
transition to Kilmarnock striker with his double against Aberdeen in
the Co-operative Insurance Cup.
"I was a normal
Joe Soap bank teller behind the counter - and maybe I came out of
the banking industry at the right time. It was great to get the
opportunity to come here and I want to take it with both hands. I
knew if I kept my head down, trained hard, I could get a move to a
good club in the SPL. It is difficult but I am over here living the
dream playing for Kilmarnock. Not many people get the chance and I
want to make the most of it. I'd like to get 10 goals this season
and hopefully I will go on a little run now. The standard of the
Eircom League is better than what people think but it is a step-up
coming here, The SPL is more professional and you have to adjust
your game and I think I am beginning to feel the benefit of what the
manager and his assistant Billy Brown have been telling me. I was
playing against international players against Rangers and Celtic in
the two games before Aberdeen. "I didn't have time to lift my head
at times but that is something I need to adjust to and I am
confident I am good enough to do it. David (Fernandez)is unreal, He
is not a big bloke and to look at him he doesn't look that strong,
but defenders just bounce off him. I know I can score a lot of goals
if I play alongside him."
