Quotes:
Aug 8th 2009...
DANNY INVINCIBILE was in
ecstasy last night after being drafted into the Australia squad -
especially after giving up hope of ever getting the national nod.
"I just couldn't believe it when I got
the call-up, it's been a bit surreal but I'm ecstatic about it -
absolutely delighted. I can't remember how many times I have been on
standby for the squad - then nothing happened. But this time I've
been called up so I'm really excited. I've spoken to the
manager a couple of times and while there are no guarantees I will
play, who knows what what could happen? It's a new challenge and
I've got to grab it. I'll be going there to enjoy it. It was a bit
weird because I'd been on standby so often and not been called up, I
no longer got disappointed when I missed out. I just had to be
patient, even though it looked as though it might not happen.
"I
know I've got in this time because there have been a few call-offs
because of injuries but the manager has said he'll give everyone a
chance. I just plan to go over there and have a good few days and
enjoy being part of the national squad."
Australia were the first nation to qualify for South Africa and
Invincibile is dreaming about staying in the squad for next summer's
big one.
"Getting your foot in the door and into the squad is the toughest
bit. Now I've done that the mind-set changes. Before I was trying to
make the squad but now I'm in I want to impress and stay there. But
I know that will be tough as we have a lot of good players. We have
already qualified for the World Cup so I just have to take it one
step at a time. Before I can even think of South Africa I just want
to do well when I join up with the rest of the squad."
"It's a
lifelong dream of mine to play for Australia. I played for them at
schoolboy level and for the Under-20s but never for the senior side.
It is something I would want on my CV. It's the highest achievement
you can get and I so happy and proud to be in the squad. Let's put
it this way, I've certainly had a real spring in my step since I
received my call-up. When you play football the pinnacle of your
career is to play for your country. If I can get on and get my first
cap against Ireland then that would be absolutely tremendous. It
will be good as I was a YTS with Robbie Keane at Wolves, so it will
be nice to catch up with him after all this time." win but he
said: "I was feeling my hamstring (over Burnley in midweek) a little
bit but I'm sure it will be okay. Unless my leg gets chopped off,
I'll be meeting up with the squad! Nothing else will keep me away."
Apr
13th 2010 on the Relegation Battle Ahead...."We
don't really know why we can't or how, We know it's going to be a
battle with three games away. But, if we want to stay up, we need to
rectify that. It's unfortunate because the home form's decent and,
even if we'd managed just a few more away wins, we'd be fine, It's
not something we can put our finger on. It's disappointing and it's
annoying. It's not even down to the managers because with both it's
been the same thing, When you're down there and you're playing for
your lives, a lot of the football goes out the window, It's a scrap
and you have to give your all, come off the pitch absolutely
knackered and say I couldn't do anything more than that. We know
it's going to be a battle with three games away from home. But, if
we want to stay up, we need to rectify that. We probably need to win
at least one away game. As soon as we went in the dressing-room at
full-time and it's a bit of a sour note. But we can't really look
at them and St Mirren. We need to look at our own games and say:
we've got to win. That's the 'be all and end all' of it if we want
to stay up."
