2011-12 Season Player
Quotes:
May 14th Reflecting on the Concluded
Season...Two
seasons ago we played Falkirk knowing it was winner takes all in
respect of who stayed up. If you look at the progress we have
made since then it has been huge. Especially given the changes last
summer in playing staff and management. It has been a big improvement
after all a lot of people tipped us to go down this season. But we
used that as an incentive. You do put headlines like that on the
notice board. And that was a big negative before the season had even
kicked off. Kenny has got a plan for the club and thats why he is
looking for a longer deal. He wants to bring through youth players
and get the right blend of experience and youth. And I know from my
youth coaching work there are some real prospects coming through.
Younger players get a better chance of making the breakthrough at a
club like Killie than the Old Firm. Look at how we brought on Kris
Boyd and Stevie Naismith and the club made some decent money on the
transfers. And there are two or three young players who can go far
in their careers. They can go on to bigger and better things if they
work hard and stay focused.
Jan 30th on Looking Forward to the
League Cup Final..."I
was left out of the first final against Celtic along with Paul di
Giacomo. (2001 Lge Cup Final) At the time it was hard to take
but I was a young boy and you think there will be plenty of other
opportunities. I think it's easier for a manager to leave the
younger boys out it happened again here today. I'm sure those boys
think they will have another chance soon, whereas some of the old
stagers like Garry Hay and myself maybe won't.
"Then we played Hibs in 2007 and that was a disappointing result
it would actually have been a good one to miss! When you have
a bad day like that it really hurts because you are so geed up
beforehand and the fans are all looking forward to it. So you don't
look back at those games with any fondness. It's just a
massive disappointment, and you want to get back there to try and
put it right. Part one was taking care of the rivalry we have with
A*r and getting through, and we did that
eventually. Now we'll look forward to coming back here in March.
"I joined Kilmarnock the summer after we won the Scottish Cup in
1997 and the place was buzzing. The fans still regard that team as
legends because the club had not won the cup for such a long time.
So hopefully we can maybe get a cup for them this year, and I'm
really looking forward to this final."
Oct 29th 2010 On the Eve of the Hearts (A) Match...
"We
have been playing well and creating chances, we've just maybe not
scored at the right times and obviously we have been getting
punished at the other end after one or two mistakes,Hopefully we can
get that right and get a result.
"You've got to keep believing. All the boys
have bought into the gaffer's system and how we're trying to play.
We've got to keep going and hopefully we will put things right and
get the results.
"The formation is different from what we're
used to, one up front and the two wide guys with an extra midfielder
in there. It's different to the 4-4-2 we played previously but
training is geared towards the new system and everyone knows what is
expected of them.
"When I played earlier on in the season I
had a bit more freedom in midfield. I enjoyed it, one of my
attributes is having good legs and getting about the park rather
than just sitting in. Three in midfield is a bit more fluid.
Hopefully I can get back in and help the team."
On Facing striker Kevin Kyle."They had a
great result last week and obviously big Kev has been scoring
recently, We know all about him and how dangerous he can be so we
need to keep an eye on him. He'll be speaking to a few boys on
Facebook and such like. He has always been a confident boy and I'm
sure he'll be confident at the weekend. We're not going to take him
lightly."
Jan 2nd On the Eve of the Buddies (A) Match...
"The last couple of seasons we have
had at Kilmarnock, the main thing we want to be is be in this
league.
"Until we are mathematically safe,
then that's what our aim is. After that we can maybe look towards
the top six.
"But we don't want a repeat of the
relegation fight that we had last year. We want to keep up the good
form and be in the SPL next year.
"I think the drive has also been
the gaffer coming in and the players he has added to the squad as
well.
"It's been a combination of things
but there are a lot of boys still here from last year who have
improved under the manager.
"They have still got that in their
memory and they don't want to go through that again."
Only two more wins are needed to
take Kilmarnock to the 33-point total they finished on last season,
a sum that would allow the players to enjoy their attractive brand
of passing football even more.
Fowler is revelling in the anchor
role in Killie's midfield after two months out of the team following
minor surgery.
"I'm in there with Bryso (Craig
Bryson) and Liam Kelly and with me sitting a bit more it allows them
to get forward and the full-backs as well," the 30-year-old said.
"I'm used to that kind of role
anyway but it's good to watch at the minute.
"I played at the start of the
season and went for an operation.
"The boys were playing well and
you have to bide your time on the bench and wait for an opportunity.
"(Mohamadou) Sissoko got suspended
and (Manuel) Pascali went back to centre-back and I stepped in for
the last few games.
"The way the team is playing,
everyone is enjoying it and it's hard to be out the team.
"But, when I was out, I couldn't
complain because of the way the boys were playing and the results
they were getting."
