There was no need to sell in January. Holding on until the close season would have made more sense - goals guaranteeing safety and at least as good a fee. The player was happy, he was under a long-term contract and we are seemingly doing okay financially. Even if we have a sell-on clause, what are the chances of making much from it? Big clubs don't spend big in Egypt - the second highest transfer fee ever received is by Stoke City for Ramadan Sobhi last summer - just £4.25m, chicken-feed by their standards. Coulibaly's own fee is the third highest paid by an Egyptian club - the record is just £2.13m.

Can always hope one of the Chinese teams come in for him, they seem to be big spenders these days
skygod
Indeed, and the record Egyptian transfer fee is to Al-Ahly from a Chinese club last summer (£6.16m), which suggests that they are active there.

If we hadn't sold him in January and he broke his leg in the first game in February we'd all be on here moaning about not taking the money when it was on offer. Sammon and Longstaff have chipped in with goals in his absence
Scouser2
Maybe we were forced to to sell him ASAP..........due to financial circumstances....

If you're that risk averse, you would accept any offers for your best players at the first opportunity. Only if you desperately needed quick cash would you do that and, I would argue, the chances of him being worth more in the summer were higher than of him breaking his leg. If we were worried about him breaking his leg we would have told him to cut out the handsprings!
Nigel4
True. I would love to have kept him until the summer, we might have pipped Partick for the top 6 if we had. But it would have been our luck that something would have happened to him after turning down that amount of cash

bute-killiefan
Al Ahly supporting pal tells me he played a game somewhere in Africa, flew back to Cairo with the team then up and left without saying a word. The club officials feared the worst then he Tweeted from London. He left using his Italian passport as the club holds his Ivorian one. To say the club and the fans are not impressed is an understatement.

PrestersKtid
bizarre, didn't seem like he was having the best of times to start with but was scoring goals regularly. To just leave is weird, annoying as it could cost us further money.

We got a lump sum payment upfront which removed the requirement for appearance clauses/ sell-on etc. It was reported it was £750k with "add-ons" but I'm led to believe it was cash £900k upfront with small appearance fees.
