I wonder if we would be able to do that deal now if it was happening or if Villa would prefer to wait till deadline day in case they can offload him permanently. He’s scored a couple for their U23s lately https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/aston-villa-transfer-news-rumours-14170215 Aye, if we're sniffing about these kinds of deals, it'll probably be late in the window before we get anything finalized. Teams would rather get money now for a player if they can, and if not we can offer a shop window, good facilities and coaching, and decent football.

Hawkshaw seems well down the pecking order for midfield as well. IMO it would do him the world of good to go somewhere and get 10-15 competitive games under his belt.

They’ve just agreed to sign Kenny McLean from Aberdeen and allowed him to stay on loan for the rest of the season. Can anyone understand this deal? They could have had him for free at the end of the season. Doesn't seem to make sense to buy him, pay him higher wages and get no additional benefit over signing him on a free.

Pre contracts can still be cancelled by either party so signing him now guarantees the player is theirs.

Saw something the other day about certain Norwich players guaranteed to start through clauses in their contract. Norwich owe them more money if they don't play a certain number of games so McLean would miss out until they are offloaded in the summer. Could be nonsense though.
Wee_Eck1979
Pre contracts can’t be cancelled by either party. They are legally binding just like any other contract.

There will be get out clauses for both parties, this may however include things like financial penalties.

Gordon Strachan had signed a pre contract with Koln then did a U-Turn and went to Man Utd. skygod
And Richard Brittain, who changed his mind about joining St Johnstone. PCAs are legally binding contracts but, like anything else, they can be set aside by negotiation and money changing hands. It’s unlikely a club would enforce a PCA if it meant forcing a player to play against his will.
piffer
Did Brittain not sight his wife’s health as a reason for cancelling his pre contract. If I’m thinking of the right transfer he’d agreed terms when County looked to be going down and changed his mind after they’d stayed up. Initially he didn’t say what it was but had to say it was his wife after St J suspected foul play.
King
Not going into any detail (mate’s wife and Ritchie’s wife are mates) but it was definitely his wife’s health that was the issue.
Estragon
The details of it were made quite public at the time - not by Brittain himself.
