Rangers fixture farce

Recommended Posts

As the league table currently stands, Rangers will have played the other top 5 teams twice at home and once away before the split. Daily record printing an article that the post split fixtures wouldn't be fair on them to go on and play all 5 games away from Ibrox.

They then go on to say almost certainly 2 of the 5 teams will have to play at Ibrox 3 times in order to even things up. However, it apparantley canny be Celtic and canny be Aberdeen because they'd be really angry, obviously, leaving 2 from us (as it stands), Hibs and Hearts to get shafted because less people would care.

Riddy.

The clubs are seeded based on last year's league placings I believe, the lowest seeds are chosen to swap their home games in instances like this.  Therefore us and Hibs  will have to go to Ibrox 3 times.

We can't complain too much coz we'll have played 17 at home before the split so will end up with an even 19 home and away.

There was a list on this website a long while ago which showed how often each team had more away games than home after the split. Every club had been affected numerous times apart from Rangers who had it once and Celtic who had never had it. I find it hard that this is a coincidence.

When looking at the number of home and away fixtures after the split, you also have to consider the fixtures before the split.

Clubs play 33 matches before the split so a club could have played 16 home and 17 away and three home and two away after the split would just be levelling this up.

Sorry, I maybe worded that wrong. There have been plenty of teams who have ended up with more away games than home over the whole season as a result of the split, but it had only happened to Rangers once and never to Celtic

Biggest fixture farces, Daily Record rewriting history again:

The title race (2008)

We're closing in on the 10th anniversary of one of the most keenly contested – and contentious – league finishes in history.

Scottish football likes to put itself down, but the thrilling title race between Celtic and Rangers would be rebuffed by Hollywood execs because it had too many twists and turns.

Rangers were battling on four fronts as they looked to land a historic quadruple and their run-in the UEFA Cup Final led to a backlog of fixtures as Gordon Strachan's side piled on the pressure.

Rangers were furious for not being allowed to cancel their game against Dundee United on the Saturday before their UEFA Cup Final against Zenit.

The Ibrox side's then chairman David Murray branded the SPL’s decision not to extend the season as 'laughable', but the league body said there was 'no viable alternative', as Rangers played three games in five days to finish off a mammoth 68-match season.

Those opposed to Rangers' extension request pointed to the Glasgow side having their fixture against Gretna postponed before their Champions League qualifier against Lyon earlier in the the campaign.

Celtic edged their rivals to the title in a thrilling finish to the season, winning the league at Tannadice as Walter Smith's side crashed to defeat at Aberdeen.

No mention of the fact that the league season was actually extended.

Only two things guaranteed.

Huns and Tims play each other home and away twice.

Huns and Tims play 19 home and away.

Always found that irritating. I assume that this would be agreed by the rest of the clubs prior to implementing years ago?

If it was agreed (by the rest) then they have a cheek complaining when the system goes against them with an 18/20 home/away scenario or going to Ibrox/Celtic Park 3 times.

The whole split concept and anomalies it creates makes our game look amateurish...time to rectify I'd say.

Just shows what a shambles the administrators are. If you askedmist fans in Scotland before the season who would finish in the top six they would have said TIc Dons Sevco Hibs and Hearts with one place to be decided - probably Saints.

The fact that Sevco will have by the time of the split played the 4 big teams at home is an utter joke. A coincidence? I don't think so - designed to give them the best chance of making the top six and improving their cash flow which is precarious at best.
