Kilmarnock star Chris Burke reveals secret sleeping, eating and football routine that's been key to longevity. CHRIS BURKE, the Kilmarnock winger, could hardly be accused of sleeping through the latter chapter of his career. The 36-year-old has signed a year’s extension to commit to another season with the Rugby Park club but there has been nothing dozy about his determination to wring every last ounce he can out of his playing days. Still, making sure that there has been plenty of time for bed has been key to ensuring the longevity of his professional career. “I make sure I am sleeping more than I used to,” said Burke. “That might mean one night I’m in my bed for 9pm so that I know I am fully rested and have enough energy as I look towards playing on a Saturday. Small things like just an extra half hour or 45 minute rest make a huge difference.” If late nights are a thing of the past, it is the same when it comes to any junk food in his diet. While younger players might be relishing the re-opening of Nandos, Burke has been meticulous when it comes to fuelling his body to get the best out of it. Gordon Strachan cited porridge and bananas as the reason for the twilight years of his career at Leeds and Burke has been heavy on the fruit and veg as he seeks to stay in optimum condition. Crucially, though, has been the open-minded nature of his willingness to experiment to find what works best. “I’ve changed a lot of things,” said Burke. “My diet is different. I make up my own shakes in the morning for breakfast with probably two portions of veg and one fruit and then my lunch tends to be a vegan or vegetarian option. I’ll maybe have a more normal dinner because I don’t want to cut protein and meat out entirely. “I have always felt that small changes give you a big result. But, crucially, I think I have the same enthusiasm, the same passion and excitement for football now that I have ever had. I was lucky enough to work with Gordon Strachan when he was Scotland manager and he still had that fire and energy about him. You can imagine that would have been a big part of what sustained him as he played into his 40s with Leeds. “Here at Kilmarnock I am indebted to Andy Millen too. He is a great support to all the players but he was another who played into his 40s with St Mirren and then had a stint at Queen’s Park after that. All my career I have heard more senior players tell me to look after myself and not quit too soon. When you are a kid it doesn’t really sink in but as I have got older I have thought much more deeply about it. Guys like Andy who knows what it takes to look after your body so that you can be playing at a later age offer invaluable advice.” Dyer’s appointment has been welcomed in the Rugby Park dressing room with Burke itching to get going again to atone for last season’s eighth place finish as soon as football is back up and running. “Everyone was delighted with Alex getting the contract,” said Burke. “He knows what it is likes to have success at the club, he knows what it is like to struggle, he knows the players, he knows what we need to bring in and he knows where he wants to go and the way he wants to play. “I honestly feel that Kilmarnock are a club on the up. We all know how devastating the Covid-19 crisis has been but there is such strong camaraderie here that even in a global pandemic I still feel that we can come out of it with genuine intent to go and improve again.” Training at Rugby Park has continued in small groups with no contact but Burke is optimistic that the impact of the Coronavirus can also instil a little independence in the playing squad. “Players moan about everything; no water bottles, dirty boots, a missing pair of socks….now that we are washing our own kits and doing so much more for ourselves then you would like to think it has opened a few eyes to how pampered we are in normal circumstances,” he said. “I’d like to think that can go a long way when we do get back onto the park. “I am the type of person who is always striving to do better than the last time. I never set myself targets such as goals or assists but rather it’s about improving on what I contributed to the team last season. This season I’m optimistic we can better that eighthplace finish and get ourselves back in the top six.” https://www.thenational.scot/sport/18531868.kilmarnock-star-chris-burke-reveals-secret-sleeping-eating-football-routine-key-longevity/18 points

Folk moaned about Branescu at corners, but this guy only comes out for collection once every three weeks!9 points

What a magnificent gesture from the club in these difficult times. That's exactly what a community club acting for the community should be doing. For Celtic it's just pin money but for Killie it's a high proportion of their 'zero' income at present.8 points

The KCST is responsible for distributing free tickets to local youth groups so it might have the same effect.7 points

He's become one of my favourite all time Killie players. Always gives 100%, creates moments of brilliance and seems like the nicest guy in the world.7 points

@Mclean07 doing what he does best, finding something to moan about, if its not his annual sabre rattling at fellow fans over a lack of season ticket sales, it's now the clubs fault for not dishing out 'free' U16 tickets that leaves them out of pocket via payments to the KillieTV suppliers....6 points

Think we’ve probably got more to worry about than kids not getting subsidised to see Killie games. No schools for months or the foreseeable, kids falling through the gaps, daily social care missing, generation going to be affected for years to come and generally lots of people in a s**tty situations, if a charitable donation goes some way to helping any of that then I think the club have their priorities spot on.6 points

Half the folk on this thread moaning about under 16 ticket prices don't even have kids that fall into the category. As someone who had to shell out for my son this year I can exclusively reveal I don't care!5 points

Our club has given away a free season ticket for years, many clubs don't. I don't think we have made this decision other than not to cost the club money at a time when we're losing £100,000s this season already. In an ideal world, with no streaming then the season tickets would be free, we all know that. The club will be losing a fortune this season. We'll be back to free season tickets next year.5 points
-
And more than likely coordinated by erm, KSCT who have been given the money. It's almost like the club have thought this through and channelled it to the area of the club that needs it most. Fair play. If others would rather just give Sky 50k so we can give U16s a link to a stream then more fool them.5 points

Why do so many us obsess with bringing players, who have left us, back to the club. It's the same every transfer window. They probably leave us knowing, if things dont work out elsewhere, they can always come back to Rugby Park. Move on FFS.5 points

Stewart would have had a call up to the Scotland squad if he stayed with us after January the form he was in. We were as good for Stewart as he was for us that season.5 points

Nobody’s forcing anyone to pay £70, it’s a choice that people will make with what they want to do with their money. Every penny is going to be a prisoner for a few years for the club so if people can afford it no big deal. Can’t believe all the moaning f**kers who just pick holes in anything the club does, people seem obsessed with saving their selves a few quid at the expense of the club.4 points

An absolute star for this club in every respect..the legacy will hopefully continue as his young son who plays at under 13 level for Killie is an outstanding prospect4 points

Me & Tommy Adam's got a poster each in the local McDonalds they had a couple up in the restaurant & we asked if we could have them. The manager who IIRC was the Sigma chairman disappeared into a back room & brought us a brand new poster each. Top guy.3 points

All we've heard for weeks - we're losing a fortune, we need to cut back. First opportunity- oh look shiny shiny Hateful club.3 points

In a football sense if there was ever a player who made the wrong move it was Greg Stewart. His run in the Hibs game was up there with one of the best pieces I have ever seen from a player in a Killie jersey. The look on Hanlon's face after he was skinned was priceless.3 points

Not aimed at you humper.... People really need to read the FAQs. It clearly states the free U16 ticket is only suspended not abolished. It costs the club money, which they can ill afford to shell out at this time, if they issue these tickets just now, I can't believe the amount of moaning given the unique situation the club find themselves in. Maybe not the 2020/21 season, but I'm positive we will see the free U16 tickets return further down the line when the current situation subsides and fans are allowed back in the stadium.3 points

Whoever owns that page would get a high end job wae the sun. For the amount of s**te spouted from it. E.g. the club looks to expand the stadium to 25k, also recommended a high scoring player in the dannish league valued at over 650k plus 3 years to go on his contract. And the fact that some folk have believed these rumours is beyond me.2 points

There is a blacklivesmatter.com website which has some political statements on it that are definitely left of centre, not to say Marxist. Some of this stuff is not related to racism against minorities but is the agenda of a political movement that not everybody might want to support. By taking the stance they have football could be seen to be expressing support for a political agenda rather than George Floyd.2 points
-
But you haven't made any argument for or against, just heard the word 'marxism' and repeated it as if to throw a bit of shade on anti-racism protesters. It is dog whistle politics and you've came running.2 points

It's getting used to pay guys like Jacko, so good enough utilisation for me. Might be a controversial opinion but paying for U16 season tickets, so they can get a stream, when the adult will already have one is a waste of money.2 points
-
If the season starts behind closed doors then the U16s can watch the game with the adult who purchaeed a ST. I fully expect a deal to be made for U16s once we can attend RP again.2 points

It's the not a bribe, bribe money from that hearts chap. My understanding is, it must be used for community projects. Clubs have to prove it, before they get it. KCST does stuff like that. Football memories project. Mini kickers & other coaching schools (when it is safe to resume. Obviously.) They hand out some tickets to the weans too. https://kilmarnockfc.co.uk/community/2 points

An un-forecasted windfall, rather than fire it into an agents pocket or prop themselves up like the majority will, our club gives it to charities. Proud to be killie2 points

Agreed. Loaning guys like Stewart to clubs if they aren't involved in first team duty would be very prudent.2 points

I think you have to spend just a few minutes in Twitter to see that BLM has been used as an excuse to feel aggrieved by those who need to think about it most. That includes a lot of football fans, it would seem. "Get this crap off the shirts - we don't know who (the players) are" seems to sum it up.2 points

A few yeArs ago he would’ve been a great shout but 32 now. We have an aging team as it is, need to plan for the future a bit. should be trying to get another couple mcgowans. 23/24 with a couple hundred games under their belts2 points

McInnes is playing football manager - looking up on his transfer filter and offering everyone that's out of contract a deal regardless of whether they fit in or not. He even did the cheat move with Stewart and took over Birmingham to get Stewart recalled so he could bid. Classic Champo move - first class c**t.1 point

Agree that Sevco will throw everything at it, put they don't have the cash to splash on buying a decent squad so will be more reliant on using the guys they have, loaning players to take points fae celtic is a good plan but they done have the budget to pay majority of loan players and wages of new players, hope they do try it tho a step closer to oblivion1 point

Good point...Scotland is full of small clubs with small supports...better that than the duopoly that the Scottish press love...and the endless drivel about teams with biggest supports must be in top league...Hamilton like us are in the top league on merit...1 point

He won’t be involved in any disciplinary decisions relating to Scottish clubs, or the National side. Better to leave the paranoia for those that seek it in the South and East ends of Glasgow I think.1 point
