If we have to pay a fee then move on and look elsewhere. Pompey have only offered the contract to try and get compo, I’m sure the rule is that the club have to offer the player a minimum of his current wage to be entitled to compo, if Pompey are so well off to pay him to sit on the bench fine.

We can’t afford to be drawn into these shenanigans, there will be loads of players currently without an come who will gladly accept some guaranteed income and security.

In England compensation is worked out by the PFCC due to an agreement between clubs. For cross border it’s worked out by a FIFA ruling. That money is calculated differently based on training, length of time at club and a few other things. The PFCC take circumstances into account where FIFA dont. If it’s a hot property moving between English clubs the seller will likely be awarded more. Cross border reputation, talent and the like don’t seem to come into it. Few cases I can see mentioned are Dembele to Celtic which meant Fulham lost millions. Aribo to Rangers where Charlton lost out. There was one article about Danny Ings move to Liverpool from the telegraph. Can’t find facts to back it up but Burnley were awarded £6.75million. It’s claimed if he went cross border that would have been closer to £300k

What is training compensation?

Training compensation is a financial reimbursement to a player’s training club(s) when they sign their first contract with a professional club and/or on each transfer until his/her 23rd birthday. The amount payable is calculated on a pro rata basis based on the training period spent with each club between the ages of 12 and 21. In the instance of subsequent transfers, compensation is owed to the former club for the time effectively trained at that location.

When does it need to be paid?

Training compensation needs to be paid within a month of the player signing his/her professional contract.

How is training compensation calculated?

The amount is calculated by multiplying the value amount to the level of training (this is determined by country and club) by the number of years spent training between the ages of 12 - 21. Training compensation paid until the age of 23 for training received up until the age of 21.

Why do different clubs have different financial values given to them?

The training costs are designated for each of the six confederations under four categories of clubs based on the financial investment in training players. The training costs are then set for each category and correspond to the amount needed to train one player for one year multiplied by an average “player factor”, which is the ratio of players who need to be trained to produce one professional player. The resulting figure represents the average cost for training one player at a club in a particular training category.

Are there any exceptions or special cases to training compensation?

Yes, there are a few. We will list them but we suggest our visitors to consult FIFA guidelines to understand the specific details. While the training compensation rates are set for specific ages, FIFA sets particular compensation for players between the ages of 12 - 15. Training during these 4 seasons shall be based on Category Four clubs, regardless of level played. The exception is not valid if the player signs a professional contract before the end season of the player’s 18th birthday. If a player terming his/her training period before the age of 21, training compensation is payable until the end of the season in which the player turns 23. The calculation is then based on the years between 12 and the age when it completed.

What about solidarity payments?

In cases when a player is transferred between different jurisdictions when he/she is still in contract, the fee is then negotiable and 5% of this sum is distributed pro rata to all clubs involved in the training period from his/her 12th birthday.

There’s a formula, if you search for “FIFA training compensation”.

You would need to know which category of club Portsmouth are but that should be findable.

Just did one of the online training compensation forms and it's calculated that we would have to pay €135,000.

Don't know how accurate it is but looking at how much rangers and Celtic had to pay in compensation for Aribo and Dembele it could be about that mark. I also don't know whether they were both still contracted at the time or like Haunstrup they are out of contract so that could then lower the cost a fair bit.

Kenny Jackett was keen to retain the 23-year-old to aid the Blues’ latest bid to escape League One.

However, Mark Catlin revealed the left-back has rejected an improved offer, which included a pay rise.

With his contract having now expired, Haunstrup is now classed as a free agent and is presently in negotiations with Kilmarnock.

Should that prove to be his destination, Pompey will be entitled to receive training compensation, in line with FIFA regulations.

Catlin told The News: ‘We made an offer to Brandon.

‘We would have liked him to have stayed, but given the new salary proposals and where we feel he is with his career, he feels his future is better served elsewhere.

‘Obviously he is out of contract and free to do that.

‘The offer is still there for Brandon, we would like him to sign, but obviously it’s his decision.’

Haunstrup came through Pompey’s ranks to make 57 appearances and score once.

However, following a knee injury in December, he played just twice more this season, failing to make a squad after January.

That includes not being named in Jackett’s 20-man squad for either leg of the play-off semi-final against Oxford United.

Instead, Lee Brown and Steve Seddon were preferred at left-back – as has been the case during the second half of the campaign.

Haunstrup featured 19 times during the 2019-20 season, memorably scoring his first career goal at Harrogate Town in the FA Cup in November.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see Waters depart if Haunstrup comes in as our starting left back. He wasn’t happy last season when Niko came in so doubt he’ll be too happy about this. Haunstrup looks like a really good signing though.

Must have missed when Waters became Andrew Roberston over night to consider himself an automatic choice at left back

Would be good to see this deal finalised and not have us just used to get better terms elsewhere

Not sure we could offer the kind of wages Portsmouth first team will be on , hopefully IF he chooses us it will be more the idea of consistent first team football and chance to get his career going in the right direction instead of just seen as a cover at Portsmouth ......

No but you can understand his frustration. He's came in when Taylor was injured and played really well, Taylor leaves and we bring someone new in. He goes on loan to another SPFL team and does reasonably well and still doesn't get played. Haunstrup is the better option but I can see Waters leaving meaning we’ll need another backup left back.
