Removing the Queen as head of state and becoming a Republic. The first of many probably.

Well done Barbados, a pointless thing for a modern world, where someone whose inbred ancestors were better a fighting than others, is celebrated and treated as if they're inherently better then you.

One thing at a time. It would only lose yes votes to suggest becoming an independent republic.

That is what I was getting at. The SNP need to focus on what unites the independence vote and becoming a republic is not that many people's top priority. On here maybe but trust me, out there in the land of bus passes and Orange Order members you would get lynched for even asking "what is the point if Betty Battenburg".

Keeping everyone onside is what politics is all about.

Agree. Secure independence first and the future of the monarchy would be a discussion for further down the track

I wonder if a certain Alistair Darling still believes in a Workers Republic...?

...or like so many Labour "socialist" brethren, gave up wee things like principles when money and ermine were on offer?

btw, that’s John Maclean on the banner, the Socialist thinker and anti-war activist who advocated a revolution to create an independent Scotland. 9_9

That'll be around the time the absolute wankpiece darling said Scotland couldn't be independent and they'd (notice theyd and not we) would be eating out of bins and fighting in the streets over the kast tin of food.

Horrible horrible sell out w****r.

I notice a recurring theme here. "You think things are s**t now, just wait till you are independent". Well that arguament will get blown out of the water by Dom's EU no deal plan. Austerity on steroids fir the peasants I'm afraid.

Then there us the, "they wont let you into the EU because of your deficit" arguament. Aye right! If the EU get the opportunity to stick it right up the Brexuteers of Little Britain by admitting a country which had been undemocratucally pulled out they will grab it. Ways if massaging the figures will be found.

This is only needed if you believe the GERS figures represent anything like reality.

remember the bit Scotland gets and then spends is all balanced.  It’s the bits that WM spends and then assign to us which they then misrepresent as a deficit and massage the numbers trying to tell us that we create 60% of the UKs deficit with 8.9% of the population.

I think you’ll find in other threads many many examples of how spend will be different and this seasonally adjusted deficit mostly and I do say mostly vanishes.  Examples such as not spending 500m on HS2, Billions if extra taxes from food and drinks exports which are counted as English as they leave from Dover, Not spending 700m on the revamp of WM, a 1b spend on defence instead of the supposed 3.5b ‘assigned’ to us, etc.  Just those numbers alone take up about 50% of the paper deficit.

But this is about Barbados taking the bold step of being a republic, not the battle for independence we have on just now.

Why wait that long ?

Fair point. I'm no monarchist, however I do think the Queen has done a remarkable job and comes from a time where Royalty and Monarchy had a place so she should be allowed to see it out. Her kin are not up to the task and their position is no longer relevant IMO.

The Queen is the last icon of an era which has long gone. Like steam trains and ten shilling notes. Still in place out of respect.

When she goes I agree with skygid. The traditionalists will try to install a successor but it will be a catalyst for change.
