Sad news and he has in recent years has not had the best of health, was one of the best goal scorers around in his day and for those of a certain age (pre SKY) growing up watching his show with Ian St John was very entertaining and must see TV if you liked football

World Cup-winning England striker and Tottenham's record goalscorer Jimmy Greaves has died at the age of 81.

Greaves began his career with Chelsea before spells at AC Milan, Spurs and West Ham.

He scored 269 goals in 379 games for Tottenham and holds the record for the most goals in a season for Spurs with 37 in 1962-63.

A member of the World Cup-winning squad in 1966, Greaves scored 44 goals in 57 games for England.

RIP.

His goal stats are phenomenal. He must have been some striker.

Saint & Greavsie was compulsory viewing, back in the day. From memory, it consisted of 30 minutes of Ian St John in fits of laughter at JG’s patter.

Without checking, there must be a story behind his short lived AC Milan career. 9 goals in 12 games.

Incredible goal record abroad. You have to wonder how much getting injured for the WC final affected his legacy in football.

Seems much more ordinary English players of his generation were lauded for a single match, despite being nowhere near as good.

I have it at the back of my mind that Chelsea wouldn’t sell him to Spurs so he went via Milan.

Could be wrong but it rings a bell.

He had 2nd thoughts after he signed for Milan but the contract was signed so they made him honour it.Chelsea and Spurs both tried to sign him but he thought he had more chance of success at Spurs.Fee was set at 99,999 so he wasn’t the first 100,000 player,it’s all in his book including getting a yellow for kicking a player who spat on him while playing for milan

I watched a recent documentary about the 66 World Cup team. When Alf Ramsay took over he apparently informed the players that only three of them were world class, Jimmy Greaves, Bobby Charlton and Ray Wilson. The rest of the team's objective was to get the ball to them as much as possible.
