findis
We had a thread running on the old forum showing pictures of how the town used to look,so I thought I would start a new one on here. A picture of cars coming down Bank Street towards the cross.

jasper
The demolition of Duke Street still rankles with me as the most purblind piece of municipal vandalism ever committed in Kilmarnock, helping to uglify a town which already had problems in the aesthetics department.
Killie1984
It's not just Killie. Scotland is a beautiful country but is badly let down by terrible planning descisions in many of it's towns
Mister Y
Bank Street seems pretty well preserved. How many of you have ever walked around the town centre and taken in some of the architecture that remains! Try checking out the tops of the old buildings around the town centre next time you're in town, you might get a nice surprise!
findis
I've been round the town and looked at most of the architecture fair but remains, but when they destroyed places like Duke st and Waterloo st and replace it with the cardboard box mall, it shows the lack of thought in their so called regeneration.

killiefan27
There's a Facebook page by Frank Beattie, who writes all the history books of Kilmarnock, which has some good old photos: https://www.facebook.com/The-Words-Works-of-Frank-Beattie-475344285963552/?fref=ts Edited March 28, 2016 by killiefan27
findis
That is a great picture, and Frank certainly does have a massive collection of pictures of the town, as well as a fountain of knowledge. The other facebook page to check out is this one. https://www.facebook.com/groups/837686822952033/

Scooby_Doo
Help me out - is that facing what is now Lidl? In hindsight it does seem ridiculous to have bulldozed Duke Street for the Mall, but what was it like in the mid 70s when it was done? Did anyone want to save it then or was it seen as progress?

gdevoy
Looking at these photos brings things all back and brings into sharp focus what an act of urban vandalism the development of the ton has been over the last 40 or 50 years.
jasper
Part of the Sandbed used to be called Swine Raw, which I think would be a fine title for a novel. There is a photograph of it somewhere showing a short polygonal chimney emerging from a seed store. Does anyone have it, and if you do, could you PM it to me, please ?
