January transfer 2017 (in/out)

Jackson Irvine's goal last night was his ninth for a struggling English Championship side.

NO-ONE in our current squad could do that. I wonder whether the entire team could get that many?

Boyd once (maybe) but not for last three years!

When I look at 'wish lists' there's no mention of forwards which shows how bad the rest of the squad is.

For me, the only answer is playing our only goal scorer as a forward.

Of course, until we change style of play, the ball would keep coming back at us but it's doing that now or do the possession statistics lie?

Maybe Clark's refusal to try and adjust to play to Coulis strengths is an admission that he doesn't think we can?

Loan deals for Freddie Woodman (GK), Callum Roberts (R/LM) and Sean Longstaff (ACM) all from Newcastle done and dusted.

Excellent yet more untried youths from an English academy, just what we need to get us out of the hole we are in as this approach to recruitment has worked so well in the first half of the season.

North Shields-born Sean usually plays in the number ten role behind a striker, but is also capable of playing in a deeper-lying position in midfield.

He made his Under-18 debut against Arsenal in April 2014 and has progressed quickly since then, stepping up to the Under-21s for a Northumberland Senior Cup tie with Team Northumbria in which he entered the fray as a substitute and grabbed a hat-trick.

Now firmly established in the Magpies’ second string, Sean is one of the Under-23s chief goal threats, and he bagged another hat-trick for Peter Beardsley’s side in their 5-1 Central League Cup victory over Hartlepool in October 2016.

A skilful, tricky winger, Callum is an exciting talent who is at his best when running at defenders with the ball at his feet.

Callum is naturally left footed, and joined United at the age of eight before progressing through the ranks and eventually making his debut for the Under-18s in October 2012.

Since then, he has managed to make the step up to Peter Beardsley’s Under-23 team, providing a constant threat from the flanks. His form for the second string led to him being handed a first team debut as a substitute in an FA Cup tie at Leicester City in January 2015, before he spent a spell on loan at Gateshead.

Freddie is a highly-rated goalkeeper who has been on the bench for the first team on a number of occasions.

A winner of the Jack Hixon award in 2015, he is one of a number of talented goalkeepers at United, and has been capped by England at every level up to and including the Under-21s, for whom he made his debut in their 1-0 win over Kazakhstan in October 2016.

The son of ex-Magpies goalkeeping coach Andy Woodman, Freddie joined Newcastle from Crystal Palace in 2013, establishing himself in the Under-18 team before featuring for what was then the Under-21 team in a friendly against York City while just 14 years old.

Along with fellow United youngster Adam Armstrong, Freddie was part of the England side that won the European Under-17 Championships in 2014.

He then enjoyed loan spells with both Hartlepool United and Crawley Town, before returning to St. James’ Park to add to the wealth of competition for a place between the sticks.

That's from Newcastles own website. All three are members of the U23 squad and two have been involved a bit with the first team. Like others I'm still not convinced this is the route we need to go down in January and it poses perhaps a bigger risk than the summer because there are no second chances after this window.

Sounds positive to me.........st mirren did well and won a trophy when tommy craig had sourced a couple of youngsters from newcastle......dummet and the red headed full back whos name escapes me.

Dummet now a first team regular for last couple of seasons and doing well.

remember these boys are actually from newcastle......and haven't been punted around york city and the likes already. They are also likely team mates of the same adam armstrong that we were all desperate to sign.

at the very least they are for areas on the pitch which badly need strengthened.

Woodman is an excellent keeper but needs first team games.

Roberts has been around for a few years and seems to have stagnated a bit. Needs a fresh challenge.

This is Longstaff's first step into professional football. Very talented youngster, looks classy but still raw and developing.

Woodman (19) played 11 times (conceded 17, 3 shut-outs) last season on loan at Crawley but he sat on the bench at Hartlepool. England U21.

Roberts (also 19) is a right-footed left-winger. Played three times on loan with Gateshead (1 goal) in 2014/15. Newcastle terminated the loan when Gateshead dropped him to their reserves. Played as a substitute in the Toon's Third Round FA Cup tie against Leicester in 2014/15. England U20.

Longstaff (also 19) is an attacking midfielder. Six goals in 10 starts in the Premier League 2 this season but has disappeared from the squad in the past month (training elsewhere?). Attracted interest from Dundee United last summer, according to the Newcastle Chronicle.

Why would we want a keeper? He's not thinking of selling MacDonald surely? You wouldn't replace him with a kid though.

They all look to have good futures in the game but it's hard to see how they would add much competition for first-team places immediately.
