Fletch
I can't find anything definitive online on bringing in free transfers. The rules of the transfer window are that you can sign a free transfer at any time providing the players was released before the transfer window closed. Different countries have different rules regarding registration where you can't register a player to compete in the division after a certain date. Does anyone know when that date is/was in Scotland? Could Steve Clarke still bring in a free transfer or 2 or is that no longer possible?
PrestersKtid
Someone will correct me if im wrong here but Pretty sure you can bring in free transfers at any time during a season provided they haven't played for more than 2 clubs that season. You can get emergency loans in but normally for keepers when rest are unavailable. Issue with most free transfers atm is why haven't they been picked up elsewhere? Although in saying that Bacary Sagna is a free agent, would've thought an english prem club wouldve taken a shot.
Fletch
That's definitely the case with the transfer window rules. So in Scotland you can register a player at any time throughout the season?
gmullin88
I'm sure the cut off for free transfer registration is 31st March is any given season.
Fletch
Excellent. Hopefully Clarke is allowed some freedom to bring in a player or two then.

Something like that. The old, pre-bosman deadline. As long as the players were released during the transfer window, they should be available as a free. Of course, we could always Simon Ford them, if they weren't... -
piffer
Did Clancy not play on an amateur basis as well as Ford. I’m pretty sure there was someone else on a similar deal too
Fletch
I don't think Ford actually played. He signed for the club as a gardener until the window opened up again so he could sign professional terms. I think that was the case anyway.

That bastion of truth wikipedia... He had to initially sign for Kilmarnock[6] as an amateur[4] because he had signed professionally for Redbridge shortly beforehand.[7] Ford was paid for commercial and marketing work while playing as an amateur.[7] On 27 December 2004 Ford scored in the 3–1 victory against Dundee on 38 minutes, a left-wing free-kick from Garry Hay found Ford unmarked, he rose to power home his first goal for the club.[8] He then signed as a professional in January 2005.[4] But, the wee notations are sound. bute-killiefan
Would be very surprised if Clarke was able to bring in a player worth signing who still hasn't found a club 3 months into the season.
piffer
There will be plenty of decent players out there. It’s worth remembering things have changed now. Playing for Steve Clarke is more than likely a more attractive prospect than playing for Lee McCulloch. This far down the line with no offer guys who were out of our price range may be more relaxed with their demands.
Scouser2
After the new duo have assessed the squad it will be interesting come January what players leave or are brought in ---- feel Clarke may well use the loan market to address some issues in the team we have number of younger players plus the "old guard" experienced ones ----but there is a gap in between

Gaz of the 20/20
Agreed, you would just hope they have kept themselves in decent shape, however, will likely still be lacking match fitness.
red_dug
Didn't we sign Faubert outwith the windows?

Yes he was on trial with St Johnstone and released as his fitness was not up to scratch, and we picked him up afterwards. However that was post January window where he had potentially not played in 6 months, if Clarke goes for some free agents now you would hope they have had a decent pre season somewhere to keep themselves fit and only been out of action for 2-3 months.

I just wasn't sure if league registration limited how long after the window closed you could sign them.

historyman
That all sounds a bit desperate. The players we have plus a few half decent loans in January should be enough to keep us safe this year then the manager can have a bit of a clear out in the summer.

Killjoy1869
Neither Dicker or Kiltie have kicked a ball for months, yet we a desperate to get them in the team. So I don’t see an issue if a good player is available on a free Edited October 21, 2017 by Killjoy1869
