Is David Bates the saviour of Scottish football

Recommended Posts

A young man who has seen the bigger picture and deciding to try his luck abroad despite playing for one of the twisted sisters fairly regularly and being in the goldfish bowl. Refreshing to see a young player take this chance and not stick with what’s regarded locally as big time.

Rangers defender David Bates has agreed a four-year deal with Hamburg, the German club has announced.

The 21-year-old, who has made 17 appearances this term, has not played since last month's Old Firm derby.

Bates, who went off after 15 minutes with an ankle injury, will move as a free agent at the end of the season.

Johannes Spors, HSV scouting director, said: "David brings a combination of height, speed, mentality and accountability."

Spors added: "He is a down-to-earth guy who wants to actively develop his career and work hard for it."

Bates joined Rangers from Raith Rovers in the summer of 2016, initially on loan, making the deal permanent in January of last year.

Hamburg, the only club to have featured in the top division in every season since the Bundesliga's creation in 1963, are in 17th place, five points behind Mainz 05, who occupy the relegation play-off spot, with five games remaining.

The club survived successive relegation play-offs in 2014 and 2015.

Bates, who had been an ever-present in Graeme Murty's starting line-up since the turn of the year, was injured while trying to stop Tom Rogic scoring in his side's 3-2 defeat.

Lets not downplay it guys mkay?

Graeme Murty remained coy when he was asked about Bates’ contract situation last month.

He said: “Talks with David Bates are ongoing but we will keep this information all in-house until we have anything to share.

“There is money to be made elsewhere for our players but let us not downplay the scale of this club and what it means to play for Rangers.”

Following Liam Henderson’s example, quite refreshing to see rather than wasting away at Old Firm.

Don't think he was quite wasting away, he played every game this year until he got injured.

But good on him, I don't think enough British players take a chance like that

Graeme Murty tells Rangers rebel David Bates he's chosen greed over improving his game

The defender will join Hamburg next season after Rangers refused to meet his wage demands.

Graeme Murty has told David Bates he’s put greed ahead of the development of his game by signing for Hamburg.

The Rangers boss has taken a pop at the defender and his agent, Grant Smith, for “excessive” wage demands the club could and would not match.

Record Sport revealed yesterday how Rangers refused to bow to a contract demand for around £7,500-a-week for the rookie starlet, who has played just 25 first team games.

However, the relegation-threatened Bundesliga club have handed him a four-year deal and he will move to Germany when his current contract expires in the summer.

Murty, preparing his side for tomorrow’s derby showndown, said: “Let’s not beat around the bush, David has gone for more money than we can offer him and he could be playing in Bundesliga II next year.

“Hopefully they don’t go down but he is going for more money than we can give him here. That is the reality of it. So take emotion out of the situation, take the fact he is a Rangers supporter out of the situation, there is a load of money on the table. Extrapolate out of that what you will.

“We offered him a contract that we felt was good enough to see him stay. I am disappointed more than surprised that he hasn’t accepted it.

“The economic reality is they made an offer we can’t match. Their (Bates and his agent’s) demands for parity on that weren’t something we were prepared to match. What he wanted was excessive and it wasn’t something we could or were prepared to pay.

“I felt he could be an international footballer by remaining at Rangers and I put that to him. He has lots to work on and develop but I feel he could do that here. Rangers is a great platform to showcase his talents.

“He has decided to go down another route and we respect that, but it’s disappointing.”

Murty insists Bates, who’s out of tomorrow’s Scottish Cup semi through injury, will remain part of his first team plans between now and the end of the season.

But he took a swipe at Smith and Hamburg for revealing details of the deal before the biggest games of his club’s season.

He added: “As a club, we would have been better served if we waited until after the semi-final to have that out in the public domain. That’s what we asked for but unfortunately the people we are dealing with did not respect that.”

Hilarious.

Rangers have such a great record in developing young talent.

“I felt he could be an international footballer by remaining at Rangers"

sadly that part is probably true but says more about Scotland selection policy than his development as a player.

They're not great losers are they? The statement after the Hibs cup final, the McInnes statement and now this.

The boy was able to quadruple his wages, and for Murty to highlight how close they are to relegation is very poor indeed.

Perhaps Bates' agent could point out how close they are to going bust thanks to Dodgy Dave and his Cold Shoulder.

John B McEachran would have been an international footballer if he’d gone to Rangers

I meant in general, not him personally. Their whole attitude the seasons in the lower leagues showed their attitude to the youth set-up, and it’s hardly got much better with signing the likes of Kranjcar and Senderos in favour of playing youth players.

Rangers must have been insulted at a young player with a decent future and first team experience asking for £7.5k a week. Goes completely against their pay structure. He should have asked for more and he’d have got it. Washed up Kevin Kyle probably got that plus expenses in the lower leagues.

And probably 100% correct, Ian Black was in Scotland squad playing with Rangers in League Two. Jason Cummings in the squad when wouldn’t have been if still with Forest. It’s a complete joke to be honest.

According to one of their hideous websites he is on less than £1k per week and they only offered him £1.5k. He wanted at least £5k which is still well below many of the diddys they have. Hamburg are giving him £5k basic plus bonuses. Seems like an easy decision and there is no doubt he will benefit as a player and a person. Phil Mac has a good article on his blog - which admittedly isn't the most impartial thing in the web and can be a bit hit and miss.
