skygod
McIlvanney extended the boundaries of humble sports journalism into literature. His writing shares few characteristics with the slevering of your contemporary hack, who relies on the oafish quotes of sportspeople and “exclusives” for their copy. There has been many great journalists but few who have operated in the medium of sport. Even fewer who wrote extensively about the unlikely subject of boxing, a sport which I detest but which McIlvanney made interesting by virtue of his prose.
