Dicker interview

Gary Dicker says rumours flying around about the Kilmarnock players ganging up to oust Angelo Alessio are a lot of “crap”.

The Kilmarnock captain admits he’s fed up of reading about himself and other players being blamed for getting rid of the Italian boss.

Some of the players have been accused of delibrately dropping their performance in a bid to put Alessio under pressure – but Dicker was firm in stressing that was not the case.

When asked if it was an unhappy atmosphere under Alessio, Dicker simply replied: “No.”

He added: “You can read into everything, listen to anything, everyone has a story.

“I’d like to know where these stories are coming from.

“Player power? You’re having a laugh.

“When you think about player power you look at maybe someone like Paul Pogba at Manchester United.

“I don’t think anyone in our dressing room carries enough clout or has enough money to start all that.

“You hear everyone talking about it, but I have never been on enough money to start player power, it’s the same with everyone else in the dressing room.

“All that rubbish about players not trying, no one in the dressing room is like that.

“Tell me the game where we didn’t try and I will have a look at it.

“We have got honest lads in there, there’s no lack of effort – maybe quality at times, but not effort.”

Speculation that the language barrier and players not buying into Alessio’s methods has been growing, but again Dicker has quashed those claims.

He has worked under foreign bosses before, and claims one of the best bosses he ever had was Gus Poyet at Brighton.

He said: “One of the best managers I have ever worked under was foreign, Gus Poyet.

“So to say players won’t adapt is a lot of s***e to be honest.

“Everyone is willing to learn, so to say that we weren’t is another rumour going about.”

Dicker claims the players are as in the dark as anyone around the circumstances of Alessio’s sacking. He said: “I don’t make decision, as players we don’t know much.

“Most of the press think they know what’s going on, but as a player we are last to know about anything to be honest.

“So as a player I can’t speak about what happened with Alessio and the board, they spoke about it during the week so now we need to get on with it.

“We aren’t going to sit here and try and work out what has went (FFS!) on, that’s not our job – we are here to play football.

“But no, I am not having the crap that has already come out.”

And the Irish midfielder says there is no way his side should be settling for a place outside of the European spots.

He said: “We shouldn’t settle for anything, people saying we should be happy with fifth.

“Who is happy to be fifth? I wouldn’t, you have to strive to be the best you can be.

“I know we aren’t in danger or anything now, but you can get sucked into all that pretty quickly.

“I am not saying we are going to come out and say we are going to win the league or finish second or third, but you have to aim for it don’t  you.

“You need to want to be up there and in and around the top teams.”

“Motherwell are third now, there wasn’t much between us and them so why not aim to be best of the rest?

Poyet isn't a fair comparison as far as language is concerned. He played in England for seven years and probably lived here for another five before managing Brighton.

Interesting article, and sounds like a passionate defence of it not being about player power. from other interviews which have come out over the last few days, it seems like the players and indeed AD as well have been left genuinely surprised by AA's departure.

There must still have been some form of falling out it seems though, if not with the players, with the board?  Does it come down to a disagreement over transfer targets?

Strong words but there are numerous examples of the players, past and present, not agreeing with the manager or disrespecting him - and publicly - through the media:

- Kiltie saying he didn’t get a chance

- Broadfoot saying training wasn’t intense enough

- Power saying training needed to change to reduce injuries

- Bruce saying AA didn’t have to do much as he inherited a top three team (or words to that effect)

- McDonald allowing his name to be used to criticise training

I really like this group of players - and I don’t question their commitment on the field - but I can’t accept what Dicker is saying. We all know there was an unhappy atmosphere.

Only the players know themselves if they refused to adapt; we have to accept his rebuttal of that.

The part I found interesting about that interview was when Dicker said:

“All that rubbish about players not trying, no one in the dressing room is like that.

“Tell me the game where we didn’t try and I will have a look at it."

Is it just me, or have there been quite a few examples in recent weeks of players looking disinterested/ not trying anywhere near hard enough?

There was a specific moment against St Johnstone where dicker lost the ball and then just turned his back on play and gave up.

O'Donnell has been doing this for weeks too.

Not one to jump on a player blaming bandwagon, but the lack of honesty/transparency here is laughable.

A few of them wanted him gone, if you can't be honest about it just say nothing

Why do folk keep posting articles from sun and record? Worst journalism out there. It’s like those that quote from Wikipedia or watch 20 second match clips and think they can judge a team on that performance.

If it’s an article with quotes, posted in full, it’s very useful imo.

Links not so much.

Because this was written by Lochlin HighetSports Editor of the Standard, and might be more authentic?

Because most of the quality papers are behind paywalls now?

If it's not, they can say.

Here’s an example of “trying” whilst in the middle of a wall. By “trying”, I mean trying to duck out of way of the ball.

On Saturday, heading into injury time whilst 1-0 down. There was a situation where the Motherwell player got away from Dicker near our 18 yard box. There were defenders covering and he was by no means through on goal, so why Dicker twice tried to take the guy out rather than get back in position or win the ball back is beyond me. At a time when it was urgent that we regained possession for the limited time we had left in the game, or club captain was deliberately trying to give away stupid free kicks.

I don't know the ins and outs of what's gone on at the club, and hey I was probably guilty of trying to bury my head in the sand with it when results were going our way.

But when we're in 5th place and the manager gets the bullet, it's naive at best from Dicker to try and pretend that everything was rosy with the players.

We didn't need interview after interview telling us what a great manager Alessio is/was. Just a simple 'we're adapting to his methods and the players and manager are on the same wavelength' would have done, but... nothing.

Dicker's at it.
