Scaremongering or Not, Corona Virus = Nae Killie

The daily death figures seem horrendous (any death figures are I suppose), but no context is ever given.

Are these all healthy people who have been killed by coronavirus? Are these on top of the normal death rate?

For what it's worth, I looked at the ONS for the death rate of over 60s in the UK. The last year with complete figures was 2018. On average, about 1500 over 60s die each day in the UK, over half a million a year.

It will be interesting to see if there is any spike in the death rate as a result of this pandemic.

The announcements I hear usually say that the number stated is people who have been identified as being infected.

They used to say that they all had underlying conditions but, as the numbers have grown, this seems to have stopped.

The French are only counting Covid-19 deaths in hospital and aren't doing autopsies to determine cause of death outside of hospitals.s.

The overall death rate will be influenced by people in hospital waiting for transplants on immune suppressants, who will be a large portion of the folk with 'underlying health issues'.  The flu or the cold could get you in that situation, but adding Covid into the mix, when no-one has immunity, will no doubt increase the overall death rate.

That figure is folk with the virus ... it would be a guess at how many of them would have passed away yesterday without it being involved.

The 107 seems a jump from the 28 announced on Wednesday... until you realise that the 28 was only for the 6hr period from 11am - 5pm.

There also seems to be more 'healthy' victims I.e. no previous underlying health issues, but that may change if autopsies are performed ... although i imagine that might not happen in the circumstances.

Since they're not really testing anyone, there is no such thing as a death rate at the moment.

I thought you meant the overall death rate in the country, not the Covid one!  They've not got enough tests to work out the death rate.  Are only doing 10,000 per day in UK and there's more immediate clinical need for medics doing treatment than processing data.  Only good thing is, that might make Covid look more potent than it actually is in the population at large - although different story if you're in a vulnerable group.

It was 43 for Wednesday.

You say 'seems to be more healthy victims' - are there figures for this, or is it the news outlets wetting themselves that someone with no reported health issues dies?

I think the media are highlighting to the younger population that Covid can kill younger / healthier people too.  At the same time, are plenty of seemingly healthy people who go through the first 30 or 40 years of life with an undiagnosed heart condition etc.

The Norwegian gov. advised all their citizens to get out of countries with 'less developed health systems - this includes the USA'.

The USA has one of if not the worst healthcare system in the developed world.  The life expectancy amongst ordinary Americans is abysmal, and this is the only country in the developed world to see health as a free market entity.

Money before everything,  they use the church to try and wash the blood if their hands.  As a nation their moral compass the so skewed they wont even recognise the middle ground and sanity.

A quote from my American colleague "oh my God no, I'd rather scrimp and save to pay my 16.2 a year than have socialism at all, I mean it's the same as communism.  Capitalism rules go USA"

Absolute howlers at the moon, especially as she also sends her daughter to a private school as the public school system is so broken, and she still pays her taxes!!

The US has the worst HIV numbers of any developed country anywhere in the world. Only places in Africa are worse.

Thanks very much for the Clap last night. Now how about sending a message to the politicians that the NHS needs respected, protected and most importantly properly funded the rest of the time.

Wishful thinking once this crisis lessens people will sadly go back to me first and johnson will show his true colours again

16 year old girl in France dead with no known health conditions. Every now and then there's real scary reminders of how this is affecting people who are on the face of it amongst the young and healthiest in society. Not that it's any more horrific than the thousands upon thousands of elderly and people with health conditions still losing their lives, but it does show how violent the infection is.

For me a sixteen year old dying is more horiffic. I don't want to die but I would rather it was me than my children or grandchildren. People can try to protect the vulnerable, but if we no longer know who the vulnerable are, then how do we protect them ?

Please .... if there is such a thing as a god .... make Trump next.

I'm sure Trump isn't just positive, he's showing every sign of succumbing to it.

Media briefings with everybody who's anybody huddled together on the stage, shaking hands with a bunch of experts in the Rose Garden - WTF?

Invoke the 25th Amendment now!

No, the media are doing what they always do - trying to scare the s**t out of you so that you stay glued to their 24 hour pish.

Now we have a poor 16 year old girl that has lost her life. That is the headline news now, and we've forgotten about the 21 year old that died the other day, because this one is even younger. It stinks. The chances of someone in that age range dying from this is tiny, absolutely tiny. Not that you'd know it from the news.
