Dean Ford, singer with Marmalade (72).

Loved that band - Reflections of My Life is a classic pop song.

Saw them many moons ago in Cumnock Town Hall.

Many people of a certain age living in the west of Scotland will remember gigs in scout halls by Dean Ford & The Gaylords.

McIlvanney extended the boundaries of humble sports journalism into literature.

His writing shares few characteristics with the slevering of your contemporary hack, who relies on the oafish quotes of sportspeople and “exclusives” for their copy.

There has been many great journalists but few who have operated in the medium of sport.

Even fewer who wrote extensively about the unlikely subject of boxing, a sport which I detest but which McIlvanney made interesting by virtue of his prose.
