Rangers and Celtic are two wins from adding a near certain extra Champions League place in 2021

Two more wins would mean a huge boost to the finances of the two big Glasgow clubs.

Both of our biggest clubs look almost certain to enter Europe's premier competition in season 2021/22 if they can secure two more wins following tonight's results in the Champions League .

Slavia Prague's 2-1 Champions League defeat to Dortmund tonight leaves them rooted to the bottom of their group and out of Europe.

There is also the small matter of finishing top 2 in the league next season.

Sadly now that is taken as read once more. :(

If they can secure two more wins, almost certain, that's Scottish football in a nutshell. We've won, two minutes from qualifying, oh well, next time maybe.

That is negative thinking, probably right though. Can always hope for another Sevcovian financial implosion..

Michael Gannon:

"Celtic and Rangers face Champions League carve-up as UEFA pull up the ladder - Michael Gannon

The last 16 representatives are all from the big leagues and that's what the governing body has always wanted.

It's probably just as well the Champions League draw for the last 16 has been bumped until Monday.

The champagne-swigging UEFA suits will be lucky to have sobered up by then.

Monday’s baws in the bowl routine won’t need nudges or winks as the continent’s bigwigs have finally got what they always wanted.

The last 16 will only feature teams from the so-called big five nations in Europe.

England, Spain, Germany, Italy and France are all there – and it’s a massive get it up yez to the rest.

This was the hope all along and they can now sit back and light the cigars like Hannibal from the A Team when a plan comes together.

Fair play, the elites have played the long game.

It was back in the late eighties they first hatched their self-preservation plot after a nightmare first-round draw.

Italian champs Napoli – with Maradona in his pomp – came out the hat along with Real Madrid.

Europe’s aristocracy were forced to draw pistols in August when they wanted to be lining up cannon fodder until the final few stages.

The Champions League was born and 27 years later, with the goalposts getting moved as much as possible, they have finally got their vision.

This mob are worse than the Tory elites. Like Boris and Co they have kept saying they have everyone’s interest at hearts and somehow managed to keep a straight face in the process.

They repeatedly insist there’s not going to be a European Super League. Instead, it’s already here – and diddy clubs need not apply.

Four clubs from England , the same from Spain, three from Germany and Italy and two from France. Just the way they like it.

UEFA harp on about history but that’s where they want the former power-houses of European football. In a museum.

The likes of Ajax ignited a dream last season but it only showed sometimes the sun can shine on a dog’s backside.

Normal service has resumed and although it’s taken nearly 30 years to get what they wanted, the rest of us better get used to it.

The ladder has already been pulled up but it won’t be long before the hatch is slammed shut as well.

This Big Five last 16 has been inevitable. If you keep shovelling swathes of cash towards the same clubs season after season the gap was always going to increase between them and the rest. It’s already wrecked the group stage. There might be the occasional decent game but most weeks you’re lucky to get odds against on an eight-team coupon.

The carve-up is complete and the rest are fighting to snap up the scraps from the table and made to feel grateful for any tiny morsel.

We’ve been doing high fives in Scotland at the rise of the co-efficient and the fact we could have two teams in the Champions League in a couple of years.

Meanwhile, the suits are sniggering.

Nah, we’ll have two teams who are allowed to try to get to the Champions League. The second Scottish side’s task will make a Bush Tucker Trial like a walk in the park.

All the extra spot will guarantee us is a safety net to land on when they get papped out by a side from the likes of Portugal or Holland before they get the same treatment themselves down the line.

It’ll be the Europa League or the new Vauxhall Conference, or whatever it’s called, for us lot and there’s hee haw we’ll be able to do about it.

UEFA’s high heid yins are popping the bubbly this weekend and all we can hope is to get a wee dunt off the fumes."

The Scots practically invented the Self Preservation League for the benefit of two teams and the only thing that matters in Scottish football is that they get to play each other 4 times a season and in two cup finals if possible.

"If you keep shovelling swathes of cash towards the same clubs season after season the gap was always going to increase between them and the rest." - true!

"The carve-up is complete and the rest are fighting to snap up the scraps from the table and made to feel grateful for any tiny morsel." - sounds familiar.

Always love it when commentators in a euro game involving the bigots complain about the "gulf in finances".

Oh the irony.

Did Walter Smith not do the same years ago and Kenny Shiels pointed out what it was like in the league?

Probably, Shiels wasn't afraid to speak up unlike most.

I’ve never understood why people in Scotland(mainly journos and OF fans) take such a derisory view of the Europa league. Atletico Madrid took it seriously for years while they rebuilt themselves to a champions league club. Sevilla take it seriously every year and it shows in the amount of times they’ve won it. Porto, Ajax have all showed it respect. These clubs realised they were not entitled to a seat at the top table and built towards getting there.

For some reason a section of people up here take the view it’s a crap tournament because of that mentality coming from south of the border. A country where teams are now aspiring to finish fourth rather than win a trophy.

I like the Europa league and I’m looking forward to the new competition as it’s about time the old cup winner cup was replaced properly.
