Match Report

James Morrison @ SuperSeal Stadium

As we headed to the renamed New Douglas Park – now called the SuperSeal Stadium! – it was easy to recall the magnificent 4-0 win on the last day of April when Killie ran riot in one of the best away performances in the past few seasons. Fans backing the team.......singing “Hamilton Accies we’re coming for you”....and also chanting for the removal of a former Chairman from the Board.

Listening to the team line-up on the radio it seemed that only FOUR of the eighteen players from that victory were still included in the squad and, despite playing well for the latter part of the previous game against ‘Well with both Boyd and Souleymane Coulibaly up front, we were starting without Coulibaly and in a familiar 4-2-3-1 formation. Killie did open the game brightly and after 7 minutes some fine link up play between Steven Smith and Jordan Jones resulted in the ball being played to the goal machine that is Kris Boyd......history was then almost made as told by the Official Twitter reporter from Kilmarnock FC

Boyd is a great finisher but that really was something else!

Frankly, from a Killie perspective, the next 60 minutes of the game were poor .....other than the threat from the wing play of Jordan Jones. Accies did manage to score after 26 minutes  when the Killie defence seemed to lose a couple of Accies’ forwards allowing Docherty to find Longridge who fired in a shot at MacDonald’s near post and under the goalie’s body. It did look as if last season’s outstanding player should have done better.

The game became so boring your reporter noticed that there actually is a castle and, of course, a red double decker bus within the ground – I tried to find the super seals but it seems it’s not animals but a 'windows and doors' company who paid money to have the strangest ground in Scotland’s top league re-named.

Early in the 2nd half a cross field pass found Accies midfielder Al Crawford and his excellent first time volley looked net bound but Jamie MacDonald produced an excellent one handed stop to, effectively, keep Killie in the game. Why we kept resorting to long ball football with only Boyd to aim for will probably remain a mystery and it just wasn’t working. It was also infuriating that we seem to never attempt to play the ball out from the back.

The management team must have seen that a change of personnel and shape was required and replaced debutant Green with Coulibaly after 54 minutes and switched to 4-4-2 – the formation which had almost snatched a draw the previous week. Killie started to play the ball on the deck and looked threatening although they hadn’t really tested Matthews in the Accies’ goal.

In the 71st minute Coulibaly played the ball out to Jordan Jones, the wingman, who was confronted with two Accies defenders – he jinked past them both and flicked over a delightful cross. Of course such a cross has been “meat and drink” for Kris Boyd who popped up between the two big Accies lads to create history this time and score his 100th league goal for Kilmarnock. Quite an achievement in football’s modern era.

Perhaps most of the Killie faithful would have settled for a draw but the best was yet to come! In 73 minutes Accies cleared a Killie corner and the ball fell to young Greg Taylor who returned a long ball into the area (perhaps that tactic can work!); it was brilliantly controlled by Coulibaly who turned and spun through two Accies players before thumping a wonderful right foot curler into the top corner past the despairing dive of Matthews. What a goal...and worthy of winning any game and his terrific gymnastics!

But as Killie fans we know nothing is ever easy and, sure enough, a punt forwards from the Accies defence was mis-judged by Addison allowing Accies sub Roy in on MacDonald one on one. Jamie produced a wonderful save with this right foot deflecting the ball away for a corner. In the dying seconds referee McLean – never a favourite with Killie supporters- harshly awarded a free kick when McKenzie and an Accies player seemed to run in to each other. He even booked McKenzie! Up stepped Accies best player Crawford with a sublime curler which, fortunately, struck MacDonald’s right hand post and broke away to safety.

Three excellent points and some positives but...Playing two left backs with one out of position is not working. Stevie Smith still has much to do to convince large sections of the Killie support that he is our best left back and should be Club Captain. We really should try 4-4-2 from the start of a game and see how we get on. Boyd is a goal machine and predator who created KFC history on Saturday. Maybe publicity for a daft Tweet, any publicity. is good – or am I talking sh*t again?

Comments

Lee Clark: "I think the substitutions and change of formation helped us once again and obviously it's food for thought now because that's two games in a row when we've gone with two strikers and it's been a lot more positive for us. Jordan Jones was outstanding. He's showed that in flashes during the course of the League Cup campaign but we need more consistency and today he's been very productive. Second game in, we've got three points on the board - we've won one, we've lost one - and I think our performance was probably better last week than it was today. But I think we're starting to improve without the ball. I felt we were quite poor at that and that's why we got hit with a couple of results like we did."

Kris Boyd: "I’m delighted to get there with Kilmarnock, especially having done it with Rangers. It’s a great feeling to do that with two teams. However, I’m never happy with what I’ve got. You might look back at the end of your career and be pleased but while you’re playing you must keep looking to add.  I still remember my first goal for Killie in a 2-0 win over Motherwell at Rugby Park (in November 2001). When you’ve been as lucky as I have over the years you appreciate it but I’ve also fought for every break I’ve been given. I’m pretty pleased with my work, sitting here 15 years after my debut and still scoring goals. But I’m kept going by my love of the game. I get up in the morning and love going to training. As long as you keep sharp in practice, get on the pitch and keep scoring goals you want more. It’s like a drug. Once you’ve experienced scoring goals you go out there feeling as if you can do it every single time.  I still have targets, always aiming to beat the number of goals I scored the season before. I know I’m coming to the end of my career. But with the young legs around about me I can still find the net.  We’ve answered a lot of critics, people seemed to think we’d just roll over. We fought our corner and stayed in the game for long periods when it would have been quite easy to down tools. The first half was scrappy but when we went two up front we caused them a lot of problems.”
